@Jabbitt I can't believe someone who 'lives rurally' would bother to do that? I bet the vets had a laugh when you left. Been much kinder to wring it's neck, they are bred to get blasted out the sky anyway. It's actually funny the vet checked its reflexes as they are ridiculously stupid anyway, I refer to them as fish with feathers!
In my opinion you'd be wasting everyone's time phoning for a pigeon, leave it for the foxes

Clymene · 10/07/2023 21:29

There is no knack honit @NoTouch. A sharp twist will do it. If you feel pity for a suffering animal, put it out of its misery. If you're too squeamish, you're not that bothered

In the style of Homer Simpson....mmmmmm pigeon 😋......seriously nothing you can really do except put out of misery and waste not....😇

I got the impression this is a standard feral shopping centre pigeon, not a wood pigeon or anything suitable for eating.

thecatsthecats · 10/07/2023 21:41

Oddly enough I was at the vet the other day and heard the receptionist deal this scenario, except with a seagull.

They can't do anything, nor can the normal rescues - avian flu. The only thing they can do is PTS, if that. They aren't allowed to do anything else at the moment.

Hey speak for yourself!! Cost of living....feral, stray racer or wood....all good for me! 😜pigeon is a pigeon is a pigeon........

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/07/2023 22:08

If you do touch it, wash yourself very very carefully and thoroughly afterwards. Bird flu is rife at the moment.

kraftyKitten · 10/07/2023 22:21

I'm sorry to say but a cat or a fox or seagull
Will find it .

We have a really intelligent pigeon in our garden. It flaps upside down wings stretched out to balance to get bird food out of feedee - like a strange yoga pose.

I am quite fond of pigeons.

Customerisnotking · 27/07/2023 10:28

@Cocacolathanks can I ask what you did in the end? We have a pigeon in the garden who I think has a broken wing. It’s been under the hedge since yesterday and I know the kindest thing to do is to put it out of its misery but I couldn’t face doing that and I’m not sure a vet would appreciate having a wild bird brought it with bird flu around.

olympicsrock · 27/07/2023 10:34

A bacon blanket with sherry bath was my treatment for the pheasant that flew into the side of a car in front of me.
I can confirm that it did well.

olympicsrock · 27/07/2023 10:41

the pheasant I helped….

In our town there is a very active bird rescue group that will come and rescue any bird even pigeons. Maybe search for similar groups on Facebook? A lot of vets are not taking in birds at the moment because of bird flu. Otherwise just accept that it will probably become a meal for a hungry fox or crow and probably led a much happier life than the majority of birds in this country which lead short unhappy lives in cramped conditions before ending up on someone's plate.

trevthecat · 27/07/2023 10:54

Where in Lancashire was it?

trevthecat · 27/07/2023 10:54

Cocacolathanks · 10/07/2023 19:25

It’s a normal pigeon

There are pigeon rescuers on Facebook. you may have to join a group first but people do go out to help.

Either you help it or noone does. There's no emergency service for wild birds.

This.

My brave and animal-loving friend keeps a brick in her boot for precisely this reason. She has put several mortally-injured birds out of their misery. She also made a pet of an injured wood-pigeon which had broken its wing - the vet recommended putting it to sleep (at her expense) because it couldn't have survived in the wild. He lived for a good 7 years at her home.

Wild birds are highly susceptible to stress and often have little chance of recovery, even if the physical injury doesn't appear too bad.

Dotjones · 27/07/2023 13:49

This all reminds me of the Alan Partridge line when he hit a fox. "I didn’t quite kill him, that was the tragedy. I had to go back and finish him off with a jack."

As for mercy killings of injured wildlife, there's another Alan Partridge quote, "Not pleasant but it's got to be done."

thecatsthecats · 27/07/2023 16:32

Oh god, don't. A badger went between my wheels once, and I dithered about with a shoe before mercifully she rolled over, gave me a filthy look and sloped off (I was only going 14mph up a steep hill in an old car).
