Sorry not really AIBU Blush

But I don't have a tape measure to hand and wondered if anybody on here could guess what size curtains I'd need for this window? I'm useless at this sort of thing and have no idea!!

Have you got a 30 or 15cm ruler lying round? Use that.

Are you buying in a shop? In which case cut/stick a piece of paper til it is the width of the curtain rail. And do the same for the length. Measure in the shop.

OR, the distance from finger tip to finger tip is very similar to your height. Use that information to get sizes. Remember, if it doubt too big is better than too small.

Alternatively, buy a tape measure. It is something you are likely to use again, and they aren't expensive.

Just buy a tape measure.
No point half arseing something that is easily done properly.

I may or may not have used a4 paper as a ruler (approx 12 inches)

Use a length of string (or something similar) to measure across the length of the pole. Cut the string accordingly.

Do something similar for the drop you need from top edge of pole down - Usually about 3 inches below sill level.

Mark the strings (or tiny knot them) so u can remember which is which eg width v drop.

Take strings to sales person at Dunelm. They will help you choose correct size.
Hope this helps.

Is the correct way to measure from the top of the curtain pole down to where I want the curtains to drop?

No from where they will hang to where they will drop to

How tall are you? Your outstretched arms, finger tip to finger tip, are roughly the same distance as your height. So if you are, for example , 5 feet , four inches, one arm outstretched, finger tip to your nose (looking straight ahead, is 32 inches (half of 5’4”). Use a mirror to judge thirds, which would be roughly around bicep to outstretched finger tips. Hope that helps.

I do that. It's all you need for a lot of things where you just need an idea of size, or need to know if a parcel or suitcase is smaller than a size limit.

One side is about 20 cm, the other about 30 cm. Fold it in half and you have about 15 cm too.

But I'm not sure I'd bother with curtains for that window. Maybe just get a nicer blind, shutters or some sort of screen inside the recess.

mindutopia · 10/07/2023 12:39

You'll need to measure it somehow. And then the width needs to be roughly doubled to get the curtain size.

Are you on an iPhone? It has a ruler on it

ShinyPikachu · 10/07/2023 12:58

I was just going to say iPhones have a thing to measure with. DH did it to measure our living room just the other day. I don't know if other phones have anything similar. It's just called "measure" on iPhone and should be one of the apps that comes with it.
