Just read this article and was interested in people’s thoughts (Residents of a quiet neighbourhood say their lives are being ruined by their neighbour's huge fence (2.4m) as it makes them feel "imprisoned".)

I have sympathy for them, but can understand that the school has safeguarding concerns.

Our lives are ruined by neighbour's huge fence - it feels like we're in prison

RESIDENTS of a quiet neighbourhood say their lives are being ruined by their neighbour’s huge fence as it makes them feel “imprisoned”. Locals of the Hessle area of Hull, Yorkshir…

Get a cat and some climbing plants, sorted.

sunshinesupermum · 10/07/2023 09:44

Not ugly at all, plenty of light coming through the fence. The school doesn't need unwarranted trespassing. The new fence should abut the existing one though to prevent rubbish in between the two. However, there is no rubbish in the photographs and who else would be chucking rubbish into the gap other than these disgruntled neighbours!

bibbityboppityboo · 10/07/2023 09:45

Looks like a normal school fence - not sure why people's gardens should have access to any open school fields with children playing, especially a SEND school.

Jongleterre · 10/07/2023 09:51

It looks fine to me.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 10/07/2023 09:51

Like a child really said that, a child wouldn’t chive a shit, they’re just repeating what their parents have said

OhmygodDont · 10/07/2023 09:51

Just a bunch of cf’s are are pissy they now can’t use the field as an extension of their gardens.

I mean what muppet has a back gate into a schools field ffs. No wonder they put the fence up.

That's what I thought!

Looks fine.
I worked for many years in a SEN school and we had those fences all around. Some of the children would have no qualms about throwing equipment and clothing over so fences needed to be high for that reason.

My bigger question is why does that house have a gate into school property? Now that is the thing that should be raising complaints. Safeguarding the children is number one priority.

REP22 · 10/07/2023 09:59

I agree with previous posters, it's not intrusive and I am sure the neighbours are up in arms because they have been prevented from using the school playing field as their own recreational facility. I can well believe the safeguarding concerns - random strangers wandering around at any hour they please, plus I expect the children, their parents and the staff are utterly sick of treading in/falling on dog poo during PE lessons from neighbours who don't pick it up.

Our local school did the same thing for exactly that reason. There was rarely a single day when there wasn't dog shit in the athletics sand or the football pitch. Or random strangers wandering around the sports fields (which weren't a short cut to anywhere else, just self-contained school grounds) when the policy was that all visitors had to sign in at reception, etc.

That’s a good point, I’m sure the neighbours would also complain if the kids threw things into their gardens.

It must be galling to lose access to so much greenery, but it was inevitable.

Our school had a second small field that wasn’t used too often, but when it was we found it to be full of dog shit. Couldn’t understand how as it was enclosed with a fence like in the OP, and with a numerical padlock on the gate. Someone was clearly using it but we didn’t know who or how.

One night I worked late and as I was leaving spotted a woman in the field with a couple of large huskies. I grabbed the caretaker and we went to the gate and waited. She was a bit surprised to see us and when questioned over how she’d gained access to school property admitted one of the ex staff gave her the gate code so she could use it as an enclosed run for her dogs. She was most annoyed to be told that she was trespassing and the code would be changed.

so yeah, the cheeky fuckery of residents who believe they are absolutely entitled to do what they want doesn’t shock me.

Sissynova · 10/07/2023 10:09

It is a school not a normal residential neighbour. No doubt they would be moaning if balls got kicked into their gardens too.

Residential planning rules don't apply and quite rightly. Why does that house have a gate on their back face onto land they don't own? They probably used to walk their dog on the school grounds in the evenings and weekends and are fuming they can't now.

What a CF. And an idiot too, if she had picked up the dog shit she may have got away with it for longer.

My son goes to.a special.school.,his school.has that kind if fencing for the SAFETY of the pupils many of whom.have no concept of danger the svhool.backs in to.a main road and is attached to.a mainstream school.so.has a huge car park .

sleepyscientist · 10/07/2023 10:13

I wouldn't be happy with that gap either. I'm going to guess the edge of the old fence is the boundary. Why not take it in a meter or so then it can be maintained and doesn't over power the neighbours. I would love a 7 foot fence on part of our garden as the slope from next door is significant, but we need planning permission eventho both neighbours are happy with it. Council should be in the same position, if they can't get permission move it on a bit as a compromise.

Also why not fence off a smaller piece of land for unsupervised play and leave the big field open for the community to use outside of school hours. Our school fields were never fenced off like they are today other than onto the main road.

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/07/2023 10:17

I live behind a secondary school. I wish that the school would maintain the fence between us aa I have just had to fork out hundreds of pounds to replace the rotten fence panels between us.

Its a special school.for children with severe learning disabilities their safety is paramount.

Mumof2boys17 · 10/07/2023 10:21

I would not want to send my child to a school that does not have big walls/ fences around blocking them from view of the public.

Sissynova · 10/07/2023 10:45

Why on earth should the school limit the use of their playing feilds so entitled joe public can use it for whatever he pleases?

It is a school not an extension of these gardens!

OhmygodDont · 10/07/2023 11:51

Anyone else remember the thread where the poster was outraged at a women harassing her to pick up her dogs poo. Turned out the women owner the land and only let the children play there from her own goodwill, then she removed access for everyone.

Cheeky fuckers. Like a poster here believing the school should only use a little bit of its own land so people can use what isn’t theirs.
