I got it into my head that I wanted to take up salsa dancing - I thought it would be good, enjoyable excercise that wouldn't be too hard on my joints (I have arthritis)

I googled local salsa groups and found one that seems to have classes all over the county, with a contact email.

So, I dropped them a nice email that went something along the lines of: "I am really interested in taking up salsa, could you please let me have details of classes local to me, I live in XXX, I would also be much obliged if you would give me your opinions on whether salsa would be an appropriate excercise for me as I suffer from arthritis and should steer clear of anything too "high impact" thanks very much...."

After about three days I got an email in reply that said:

"details on website. As far as arthritis goes, try it and see"

That was it. No hello, nice to hear from you, thanks for your query... nothing.

Now, my dilemma: I really want to go, but I'm not sure I've got the nerve to just turn up ( I don't know whether they are drop in classes, or if you have to book) and I'm doubly unsure now that I have a very curt email... is the person likely to be as short in rl?

So... AIBU to feel really, really put off by this?

(sorry it was so long, didn't expect it to be)

An email response like that woild p**s me off tbh, if you reaaly want to go could you take someone along for moral support?

fryalot · 24/02/2008 21:44

there's only dd1 (14) who has expressed an interest... but I don't know whether I would be able to take her or if it's adults only. And I'm kind of too scared to email again to ask

I guess you have to go and see. It does seem a bit rude though. That reply would put my back up too. Have you had advice from your doctor or nurse about exercising with arthitis? Some of the advanced arm movements would be counter-indicated for you as they can be quite twisty but you could refrain from those variations if you can manage the basic footwork.

I used to go dancing (ballroom/latin/salsa) and the owner was very brusque on the phone but he is an excellent teacher.

crapmomonMN · 24/02/2008 21:45

Dont take it that the person replying is the teacher - probably some admin person who knows nothing - salsa IMO is excellent. I did it and my MIL is having great fun doing it at the moment. Its up to you what effort you put in. Its not really that bad on joints (i have a ACL repair and it didnt affect it) but just put less effort in - it will still be fun. Go for it!!!

IamTheSpeedingHam · 24/02/2008 21:46

check with docs to see if ok

mylovelymonster · 24/02/2008 21:46

dearest squonk - don't be put off, go along and give it a go. Ime salsa is great fun and usually attracts a nice sort. Maybe their e-mail manner just a bit off or in a huge rush. I guess whether arthritis will be an issue is up to you - just have to try it.

Hope you have a great time. Do go along x

(YANBU in being a bit put off)

funnyhaha · 24/02/2008 21:47

Humm, that would hack me off too ... but .. if it's a nationwide organisation, the person answering the emails is probably not the person doing the classes.

Is there a number of the site for your local class? If so, I'd ring them & see what they're like on the phone....

fryalot · 24/02/2008 21:47

I'm kind of glad that you both think the response was a bit brusque as well. Wasn't sure if it was just me imagining it.

Will try to pluck up courage to send another email. I don't think I could just turn up on my own tbh. (mardy, needy squonk)

Not all dance studios or dance teachers will have websites. Try the terrestrial-paper-version yellow pages for dance studios, they all will do salsa classes and you will be able to speak to a human if you ring up.
I found 3 different classes within a few miles that way.

fryalot · 24/02/2008 21:48

ooh, funnyhaha - I never thought about ringing them. They won't even necessarily know that I've emailed them previously, will they - so they won't think I'm being nagging and whingy...

fab idea

Our local tapas restaurant was advertising salsa and dinner nights once per week (alas on a night inconvenient to dh and i).

Perhaps you have one locally like that?

PhDlifeNeedsaNewLife · 24/02/2008 21:52

let your fingers salsa, squonk

(can you tell I've had some of dh's nerve-calming scotch...?)
