Child vomited

Anon891 · 09/07/2023 20:30

Bit random question, child vomited and has a fever. Child went to parent A, cried that he is hungry and wants a carrot and juice.

Parent A got carrot, juice and toast.

Parent B says parent A is crazy and should not give child food until parent A finds out what caused the vomiting.

Whos BU- parent A or B?

Hmm well unless the child is sick again and quickly, you won't know what's caused it? If its a bug then atleast they'll be sick again quicker having the food.
When my son has born sick but ask for food I'll still give up to him.

So b

Jongleterre · 09/07/2023 20:33

B.

If it's a bug, giving more food is likely to cause more vomiting and possibly the squits.

SaveMeFromForearms · 09/07/2023 20:33

Well you're unlikely to find out what caused it, but I don't think I'd have given carrot and juice. Water and toast would have been it, and a small amount.

B is mum, A is dad? 🤣

Caravanvirgin · 09/07/2023 20:36

Parent B. Exactly how are they planning on finding out what caused it?

Although NHS advice is to not give fruit juice to a vomiting child. I would have probably suggested toast instead.

5childrenand · 09/07/2023 20:36

If the child was hungry then right to feed it, but probably best to stick with plainer food on another occasion. In any case, it won’t hurt, just might appear again.

WetBandits · 09/07/2023 20:37

The worst that’s going to happen is child vomits again. Might have just been a one-off puke 🤷🏼‍♀️ a fluke puke!

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2023 20:37

No reason to deny a child who is hungry/thirsty food or drink, unless they're nil by mouth or requested food is known to cause anaphylaxis. They may well vomit again, they may not. Some will stay down either way and actual medical advice is to eat if hungry and not restrict food.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 09/07/2023 20:41

Was parent b planning to analyse the vomit in some way to determine why it existed?

Sounds like child had a fever, fever causes vomit. Could be a virus or a stomach bug, could be dehydration there's many reasons.

Carrot and juice is probably a bad choice of food but giving some food if the child was hungry is absolutely fine and if they're vomiting then you want them hydrated. I'd have gone with water and something plain like bread, or cereal to see how it settled.

takealettermsjones · 09/07/2023 20:44

Poorly children are hard enough to get food into, I would personally never deny them food if they ask (unless, as PP said, instructed by a HCP).

Maybe plain bread/rice would have been a bit better but a carrot is hardly a chocolate fudge cake. I'd be fine with it.

I have, on advice from an A&E doctor, had a very ill child survive solely on ice lollies for days. So while water is ostensibly better, if it's a choice between fluid or no fluid there's no contest.

I would get medical advice if it's that bad though, of course.

Soubriquet · 09/07/2023 20:45

Tbh, I would let them eat what they could stomach when queasy and vomiting. A carrot is not the worst food in the world to snack on.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 09/07/2023 20:58

How was Parent B going to determine the cause of the vomit? Read it its right and question it Confused

yogasaurus · 09/07/2023 20:59

B.

EarringsandLipstick · 09/07/2023 20:59

I'd say A!

If a child has vomited, I wouldn't be giving them food, especially not juice, until some time had passed & they weren't vomiting.

If they've a fever, they're sick, not just a random vomit.

arlequin · 09/07/2023 21:17

Tbh I wouldn't give juice. Toast and water with vomiting

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 09/07/2023 21:21

In between, I wouldn't give carrot but would perhaps give a biscuit or a little toast and wait and see and I would always continue fluids.

Gatoraid · 09/07/2023 21:22

Depends if you mean proper juice or squash.
I wouldn’t give juice juice to a child who’d just vomited but would give squash.
Carrot probably not too bad.
Normally if it’s a bug they won’t want to eat anyway
