My Dad fractured his (he fell outside) in his 70s. What I will say is that he ignored the advice about rehabilitation,.sat in his fucking chair in front of the telly and then moaned about how disabled he still was years after.

My advice: nag the person witless to do the rehabilitation exercises and MOVE frequently during the day. Yes, it will be painful at first but the alternative is disability that IS avoidable.

My DM broke a hip at 90 or 91, can’t remember which. She had fairly bad dementia by then, wouldn’t cooperate with exercises, never did any of them.

Nevertheless she recovered well and quite quickly, and went on to 97.

The important thing here is not really the hip fracture, it's the other medical conditions. The fracture is fixed but the effects of the trauma and the operation can knock off the control of other medical conditions.
So make sure the staff are really on top of it and are calling in the specialists if need be as it really holds back the rehab if not. It took about a month to get my FILs heart failure stabilised again, and he was confused for 2 or 3 weeks.

The person should shortly be getting daily physio and occupational therapy to get them moving and independent again. Should be moved to a rehab unit once medically stable.

Our local rehab ward only keeps patients for two weeks and only does physio with them once a day. Visitors need to encourage the patient to work on the exercises three times a day and to do them regularly when they go home.

Indeed. My Dad got very little professional support for his rehab.
