Damaged car in carpark

I damaged someone's car in the car park the other day. Damage is absolutely minimal - way less than my insurance premium would be. I could have left without leaving my number but I left my number and an apology. The person is saying they want to go down the route of insurance. Do I have to accept this as it was on private land?

For minor cosmetic damage it’s cheaper in the long run for both parties. Wouldn’t be happy but it has happened loads of times. Worse things happen at sea.

Depends whether the other car is owned outright or leased, or part of a company fleet.

Also, you don't know how much damage has been done until it's been checked by a garage. I once got hit and was told my car would be repaired, only to get a phone call the next day telling me it was a write-off.

Our car got hit by a visitor on Christmas Eve , first of all she said she would pay it , it didn’t look that bad , it was a 50k car and damage was £3k , she then said ohh claim through my insurance , she then told her insurance we made it up .alas for her video and next door neighbour who saw it soon stopped that . Goodness knows what her insurance company thought on the end .

Were there witnesses? Next time don’t leave your number.

Like the fucking idiot who did over £2k worth of damage to my three day old car?
🤬

I hope you got a second opinion on your write off. Cost of minor repairs are ridiculously overinflated by insurers and decisions write offs are based on are equally opaque. Who pays for all this? Customers. It’s a racket. Quite frankly I’m happier to drive round with a dent than to deal with the insurance companies’ bullshit.

I didn't need a second opinion, thanks.

Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Absolutely they are in their rights to go through insurance

I had someone run into the back of me and it looked like fairly minimal damage but the garage had my car for 4 working days - and I required a courtesy car for that entire period

She too also offered to pay for it to be done herself and then when I refused on the roadside, she then tried to claim she hadn’t actually hit my car at all

I wouldn’t trust anyone to actually follow through with a ‘promise’

And if it's not your fault you claim the excess from the other person
