After spending all of last night searching for somewhere fabulous to go next Saturday for my birthday in London and coming away feeling disheartened, my DH had the brilliant idea of going to Bath instead.

So have been on the case. Have instantly found a number of restaurants that look fab and exactly what I'm after. But I cannot find anywhere in Bath that will let us stay for a Saturday night only - well bar one place that you probably really wouldn't want to stay in - oh, and another that charges £580 for the cheapest room (gosh, I wonder why they have availability?).

I know they run a business - but don't they know that parents who finally get a chance to have a night alone without kids really can't stay for two nights because they can't get someone to babysit the kids for that long. Can't someone in the hotel industry just give us a freakin' break??

It's official. I have lost my will to live trying to find something to do for my birthday. Sniff.

I'm on a roll...Some family of mine stayed here at xmas:

They liked it. About a mile from the centre.

The Beaujolais burnt down recently and has apparently been dodgy since, and the Moon & Sixpence is closed til April. The Queensbury is good for both food and staying. Try them!

Bimblin - you're being a star. Am hoping that the first B&B you posted will have space because it looks lovely - even though it's slightly further out, it do-able in a cab if not feeling up to the walk.

I love the look of the Hudson place - and I love steak, so it suits me and my husband will be in seventh heaven.

Roobie - all those you suggested look brilliant as well, so if I can't get in, will check those out.

Thank god for MNetters to save the day.

I actually stayed at the Queensbury before - prekids when we still had the freedom and money to do it. I tried their online reservation system - they don't have rooms and we have eaten at the Olive Tree - it was fab, but feel I should try somewhere different.

Bimblin, what's it like to live in Bath? I've always wanted to. Not that I stand much chance now that DH has just taken a new job in London but i can dream.

And you must do the spa:

Living in Bath is pretty good, but its not called the graveyard of ambition for nothing - jobs are very low paid and far between unless you work in tourism - and life definitely takes a slower pace. Its good for kids - lots of parks and stuff to do, schools are good. House prices are high. I lived in London for a few years and I feel I have a healthier pace of life here. Mind you, loads of people commute to Swindon/London, its well connected.

There;s a nearby stable if you're desperate.

It#s bloody annoying isn't it? What about Bristol? Hotel du vin there is fab and they accept 1 night at weekends and even charge slightly less.
