To go to the doctors AGAIN?

SwansLake · 08/07/2023 10:55

I've been in and out of the doctors over the last few months.

I've had two scans in that time. Lots of bloodwork.

My last scan showed a lump as a benign fatty lipoma (great news).

However, last year I got a new cherry mole. Didn't think much of it. This morning, I woke up and it was bleeding and scabby and sore.

Now, I feel like I should call them to check it. But I am worried they'll think I'm a hypochondriac because I've been there so much lately! Would anything sinister have shown up in recent bloodwork? Or should I try and get an appointment?

It needs checked. Don't worry about asking for another appointment

DustyLee123 · 08/07/2023 10:57

You have every right to have a changed lump checked.

LMNT · 08/07/2023 10:59

Go! It doesn’t matter whether it’s a new issue or the same issue, you have every right to be seen.

blahblahblah1654 · 08/07/2023 11:00

Definitely go if you're concerned. That's what doctors are for. They won't care how many times you go. It's unlikely they will even remember you, they must be hundreds of patients a week.

Daisythecat15 · 08/07/2023 11:03

Is it possible the mole just got caught in the night and that's why it's bleeding? You could potentially wait a couple of days and see if it heals. A concerning mole wouldn't heal. However don't be afraid to go back to the doctors, I've been endless times in the past few months with a variety of problems and they always see me happily.

SwansLake · 08/07/2023 11:05

@Daisythecat15 yes, I think that's probably what's happened. The earliest I'd be able to call would be Wednesday, so I'll know if it starts healing or not around then. Would a mole tend to 'grow back'? I have a slightly raised scab now instead of a mole.

I think moles do tend to grow back yeah. I'm no expert though! But I have a raised mole on my leg which scabs over and falls off sometimes, and then it grows back. I got it checked a year ago. Boots do a mole scanning service where you can get your mole photographed and sent to a dermatologist for evaluation. I did that and was told it was benign. You have to pay £30 but it's easy to do - book online, you get the results by email. So that's an option for you as well if you don't want to go to the GP?

Daisythecat15 · 08/07/2023 11:19

If you're in the UK that is x

Careerdilemma · 08/07/2023 11:19

They're not going to think your a hypochondriac as you have physical undeniable issues that need checking. Like the lump and now the mole. The advice to get such things checked doesn't stop applying just because you've needed other things checking too.

OldBeller · 08/07/2023 11:21

I understand why you would feel like you do but ultimately, it doesn't matter what the doctor thinks. If you're worried about something, have it checked out. Better to be safe, especially with a mole.

Willyoujustbequiet · 08/07/2023 11:28

Cherry angioma are extremely common and unfortunately just part of aging in many people. They are nothing to worry about as highly unlikely to be anything suspicious. They are benign skin growths.

They are known to bleed profusely even with a slight knock.

But if you are still concerned contact the GP.

SwansLake · 08/07/2023 15:37

Oh thanks @Willyoujustbequiet that is reassuring. Although I hope it isn't aging, I'm only 27!

If I were you, I would take a photo of the mole with a ruler next to it so you can check its size, and then keep an eye on it over the next few days. Also if you have any problems with it in the future, you will be able to see if it has grown.

Sorry.

I only know as I started getting them and one bled profusely. I saw a dermatologist and he was very reassuring.

They can be quite easily removed apparently.

Rabbitsandgerbils · 08/07/2023 22:34

You are right to check any skin lesions that have changed. The likelihood is you just knocked it but worth taking a photo with a ruler as @Sapphire387 sensibly suggests.

A further suggestion would be to call your surgery one you have taken a photo with a ruler and ask whether your GP is happy to just look at the photo via email with a short explanation and advise accordingly. That way they can decide if you need to be seen…

Our local surgery does this as it saves appointments.

Sometimes you just get a run of health problems at once. Don’t feel guilty for having genuine problems!

SwansLake · 08/07/2023 23:24

Don't be sorry @Willyoujustbequiet quiet ! That's good to know. I've considered getting it removed as it's just above my ankle so it's pretty much always on display if I have cropped jeans or a dress on.

Thanks for photo suggestion @Sapphire387 re387. I've taken one and will send it to my GP.

Thanks @Rabbitsandgerbils bbitsandgerbils, it's so true for me - I've been run down and all these issues have come at once. I'm currently suffering from a new coldsore outbreak tonight too, which is perfectly manageable but all the little things add up. 🤦‍♀️
