we had a lady cancel her shift this morning she emailed at 7:45 when her shift was due to start. It was picked up by a colleague at 08:00 who could have rang the ward and told them herself.

She forwarded it on to me knowing I don’t start until 9:00 and have tons of emails to attend to before I even get to hers.

Ward have asked by why they haven’t been notified and she has blamed me??

Aibu to think colleague is absolutely nuts??

There should be a clear policy for notifying of sick leave/cancellation. It is usually IME that the individual must contact the ward before their shift starts to let them know & contact ward manager/line manager at an appropriate time later. The issue has started with the person cancelling & escalated from there.
you need to ensure that the policy is clear and everyone is aware of it.

I agree. The woman who was off should have made sure she notified the correct person.

It all depends on what contact says on who to inform.

We technically have to let our manager know by telephone....so if we call and leave a message because she's in bed, and if it's her day off she may not get it until after start of shift. That's what's written in our contract and policies.

However it is good practice to let the people you work with that you're not going to be in.

'Absolutely nuts' is a bit of an exaggeration but certainly lacking in common sense. (Assuming that she knows how to contact the ward and that there's a process in place that makes it clear she should do that.)
