To ask how you wash period pants

New to this game. Weren't around when I was young and DD has started. I don't want to wash each pair separately but I don't want to put them in with everything else? Do I pop them in a separate bag in the laundry basket and wait til the end of the week and bung them in together? Or leave them all
Soaking in a bucket?

That all sounds like a massive faff compared to a menstrual cup, tbh.

Don't you have to boil sterilise that? Takes me about 2 minutes once or twice a day to rinse some pants then chuck them in the machine waiting max 24 hours for the next load.

All the faffing about with buckets and salt and all that isn't required.

Can't imagine I spent any more time with pants than would need to with a cup.

Deadringer · 06/07/2023 22:27

I rinsed them at first, now I don't bother, just put them in the wash with everything else.

Onehappymam · 06/07/2023 22:27

I run mine under the cold tap and wring them out til they run clear. (the next bit might be controversial!) I then chuck them over the radiator til they’re dry (don’t like the thought of wet underwear in my laundry pile) and chuck them into get washed. I usually wash them in the machine all together at the end of my period. Cool wash, no softener.

Stompythedinosaur · 06/07/2023 22:28

I just chuck them in a normal wash with everything else.

Tidypidy · 06/07/2023 22:29

In wash with everything else. No fabric conditioner. Line or airer to dry. Sometimes on radiator if desperate.

Beamur · 06/07/2023 22:29

I just put them with a standard dark wash then line dry.
You aren't supposed to use fabric softener, but I can't be bothered to do separate washes so it all goes in together. Comes out smelling clean and works no differently.

Glitterblue · 06/07/2023 22:30

I just rinse them first then stick them in the wash but DD's say not to use fabric softener so I just do that wash without it. Then line dry or hang them in the house.

FastBlueHedgehog · 06/07/2023 22:31

Chuck them in the wash with everything else. Line dry if the weather's good, tumble dry in the winter.

Zarah123 · 06/07/2023 22:39
  • Rinse with cold water until water runs clear (I also put on some hand wash liquid or rub soap and scrub)
  • Hang out to dry on towel rail
  • Put in washing basket once dry
  • Wash on a handwash / delicate cycle

This is how I do mine.

NorthWestThree · 06/07/2023 22:41

DD and I both use them. I just put them in the normal wash with everything else.

squirrelsinyourarmchair · 06/07/2023 22:41

I just rinse and then put in with a normal dark wash. Nobody has died so far so I think it’s ok!

bridgetreilly · 06/07/2023 22:41

@DappledThings Not during the period. You wipe out with loo roll, rinse under the tap, then straight back in. You can even skip the rinsing if you’re in a public toilet. I sterilise with Milton, since the time I forgot I was boiling one and burned both the cup and the saucepan.

concernedalot · 06/07/2023 22:43

One of the reasons why I won't use them. Still on tampons and pads or panty liners here, in the bin it goes. Don't need any grunge in with my washing it doesn't feel right to me. Menstrual cups aren't my thing either, I can't quite convert to all these new methods. Hopefully I won't have to deal with it much longer as perimenopausal and grumpy as you can probably tell from my post !

DiscoDeborah · 06/07/2023 22:45

I wash them in a net bag at the end of my period. I should rinse but often forget.

ChickpeaPie · 06/07/2023 22:46

You’d need loads of pairs of you waited til the end of her period and they’re really expensive.
I rinse in cold water til it runs clear, put in laundry basket then wash with next dark wash

Fair enough. But I'm only rinsing as well and only once, maybe twice a day on days 1-2 then just washing as I would do all laundry anyway. So can't see how it's any more faff than a cup.

greenmarsupial · 06/07/2023 22:47

I get DD to put the pants for that day straight into the washing machine. They go on a 0 degrees 15 minute rinse cycle then I add the rest of the washing and wash as normal.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 06/07/2023 22:48

At the end of the day, whilst I'm showering or bathing, I let them soak in cold water. Then rinse out and dry overnight.
Then put in a normal wash with clothes.

AuntieJune · 06/07/2023 22:48

@DappledThings do people really boil menstrual cups? Bit of a rinse with soapy water and it's cleaner than a tampon!

PurpleBugz · 06/07/2023 22:49

Don't soak them it means they don't last as long. I have a wet bag I use all week and then I stick them in the machine for a cold rinse with no detergent before I add the rest of the washing. Nappy bucket works well too

No idea! I've never used one but was under the impression that was the suggested process. How much it's adhered to I couldn't say.

ChuckMater · 06/07/2023 22:50

I don't understand why everyone's saying Rinse in cold water? They Rinse better in warm

I rinse in warm water then leave them to one side and pop them in with a dark wash load within the next day or so. Don't use fabric conditioner if your period pants are in there as it effects the future absorbance.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 06/07/2023 22:52

Rinse, and then wash with gym wear only, as I use fabric conditioner with every other wash (except towels and I was them at 60, so too hot)

Don't tumble dry.

klqwedt · 06/07/2023 22:52

I use a mixture of reusable period pads and underwear, converted after some really bad reactions to period products after my pregnancy. I go through a few in 24 hours. I put them in the empty washing machine and then once a day will put that on a cold rinse. Then just put a normal wash in with them once that is done.

I always rinse things in cold as it is less likely to set stains.
