To think the law needs to change on 4x4s and Supersized SUVs in Cities.

Unsure how, but today's news is just horrifying, these vehicles really need to be reduced in numbers in residential areas in my opinion. They are significantly heavier than smaller cars (I know that's stating the obvious) but who really needs a 4X4 in a city?

I can’t see the point of 4x4s unless your rural or have a big family tbh
it’s mainly a status thing having a Range Rover ! I call them mummy wagons!
I prefer a car u can nip about in low engine low emissions x

.....and many, many disabled people need SUVs due to the height.
I'm with Motability and they told me that 70% of vehicles on the scheme are SUVs, simply because the disabled person needed the height to be able to get on it.
If SUVs weren't a thing, I wouldn't be able to drive!!! And as a widowed parent (& therefore a lone parent) I'm not sure how I'd parent my child as I cannot walk!

Disabled people like myself need SUVs as many of us cannot get into lower cars! Granted, we don't need a 4x4 but I think it's obvious you meant SUVs rather than SUV's with a 4 wheel drive setting specifically

There are loads on non 4x4 larger or taller cars, with small engine sizes, even the fiat 500 is available as a tall car and the Seat Arona uses a 1.0l engine with a higher driving position.

Once hired one, fantastic do it all car.

Completely on board with banning all private cars in London. Sorry if that’s not the response you’re after!

As someone who lives in London and travels through it every day, extensively via various available transport methods I can see no reason for private cars.

With an exemption for the disabled of course?

speluncean · 08/07/2023 10:00

@Alyso I am in the situation of taking it to tribunal. Why would you think I'm not?

speluncean · 08/07/2023 10:00

There is no hospital transport to take me to the regional centre. I am there at least once a month.

Absolutely! I’ve thought this for years. I live in Liverpool and there’s absolutely no need for people to have massive 4x4’s parked out their little 3 bed semi detached on a tight, busy road. When driving around a busy city centre like here or Manchester they make life so much more difficult.

Absolutely no need? You cannot fathom that a disabled person might need a car which is higher up? Really?

Lionoso · 08/07/2023 10:03

For wheelchair users have a look at a Fiat Qubo. It's sliding doors and seat configuration are amazingly adaptable. It's a great option, not the best looking but a really nifty car.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 08/07/2023 10:05

@Alyso I never said it was about me!?! HmmConfused I'm merely pointing out to all of the "There's absolutely no reason for ANYONE to have an SUV in a town/city, none at all" people that actually, yes there is!

I had a 4x4 outside a tiny terrace house. I wasn't aware that wasn't allowed.

There are very few circumstances where a disabled person needs an SUV.

I'm not in a wheelchair but why should we have to drive around in postman pat's van?! They used to have just one type of car for disabled people and thankfully that went long ago! We pay £270 every 4 weeks so why can’t we have a proper vehicle?

Disabled people have lives outside of their disability that means they might need a SUV.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 08/07/2023 10:08

@CherryGenoa 70% of the cars on Motability are SUVs ffs! I cannot bend so I cannot get into a lower down vehicle! Please do not tell me what I can & cannot do!

AlfietheSchnauzer · 08/07/2023 10:10

@Alyso So all disabled people should be lumbered with one type of 'disability car' despite paying £260 every 4 weeks, whilst every one else can have a choice?

@Alyso do you have any idea how hard it is to get pip and/or a blue badge and how humiliating?

It doesn't look like that. It's an amazing car for wheelchair users, far better than a Range Rover for getting in and out and loading up heavy wheelchairs. I speak from experience.

Disabled people have lives outside of their disability you know.

Bellajac · 08/07/2023 10:13

My friend was killed a few years ago by someone who lost control of a Vauxhall Corsa. It's not about the car.

speluncean · 08/07/2023 10:14

The ableism on this thread is disgusting.
