To think the law needs to change on 4x4s and Supersized SUVs in Cities.

Unsure how, but today's news is just horrifying, these vehicles really need to be reduced in numbers in residential areas in my opinion. They are significantly heavier than smaller cars (I know that's stating the obvious) but who really needs a 4X4 in a city?

Just putting my ideal situation here, same as everyone else on the thread.

And I was just observing that your "ideal situation" is extremely ableist.

Never mind all the work being done by TFL to improve accessibility.

Davros · 06/07/2023 22:12

Yeah, no-one seems to give a shit about my earlier post about having an SUV in London zone 2 due to disabled family members. None of you could tell from looking why we have that far but there'd be plenty of judging

SoAndSoSaidSo · 06/07/2023 22:15

Shall we just dictate what size house everyone should own. What clothes they should wear.
I don't own a big car and don't care if someone does.
What is this need to regulate or dictate other people's lives all the time.

emmylousings · 06/07/2023 22:16

Not related to this terrible incident obviously, which was clearly abfreak event.
But generally speaking, the SUV and truck style vehicles are more dangerous to pedestrians because of where impact occurs and the position of the driver impairs vision of pedestrians.
I'm short, and was very nearly run over in the states by one of these, (at a pedestrian crossing) as I was barely visible over the bonnet!

OneTC · 06/07/2023 22:22

Most mobility vehicles are converted MPVs though, not SUVs

No opinions on fur at all?

BigGreen · 06/07/2023 22:30

I agree they are a huge trend in my part of zone 2 London. They are verifiably more dangerous if you get hit by them. Also they are needlessly bulky in tiny Victorian streets that are heavily congested anyway. I think it's crazy to be remodelling cities to make them more liveable and not do anything about suvs.

Davros I did read it and understand your family requires an SUV (or at least a people mover) for medical reasons, but that is presumably pretty rare, and certainly not the case for the numerous Range Rover/X90 drivers I know in SW London.

Their justifications are more along the lines I mentioned before … large sports equipment… need to do car pool to kids’ activities … grandparents visiting… dog. Tenuous.

minipie · 06/07/2023 22:38

if they were inherently dangerous they would not pass the safety tests

Yup, thanks to all these safety tests, nobody is ever hurt by a car these days. Hooray! 🙄

But how can any of you tell? You would judge anyway.
It is not a motability vehicle by the way

BrightBlueSea · 06/07/2023 22:41

This has got to be one of the most depressingly entitled threads I’ve ever read.
It has been proven by research that people, especially small children, are more likely to be killed if hit by a massive SUV than a small car. Yeah no shit Sherlock!
And yet here we are with many posters telling us why they are so special that they just have to have one.

YANBU.

Oversized private cars are dangerous to anyone not driving them. And if car companies think they are more profitable then they will be pushed. (Land Rovers actually aren't the worst, not compared to the American asshole-trucks.)

So, taxes and other regulations ought to be changed to make them less profitable. I say vehicle tax should be based on weight, maybe with a reduction for EVs.

Florenz · 06/07/2023 22:43

Tax cars according to their wheelbase.

Oakbeam · 06/07/2023 22:50

(Land Rovers actually aren't the worst, not compared to the American asshole-trucks.)

How many American arsehole trucks are there on British roads? I’d hazard a guess that it’s not many. To few to make much, if any, difference to accident statistics.

OneTC · 06/07/2023 22:22

WAVs are yes.

But we've swivelled a bit because @1990s wants to ban ALL private cars. So now we're pointing out that some people just need cars (not necessarily SUVs).

Florenz · 06/07/2023 22:56

Nobody NEEDS a car. Humanity managed perfectly well without them until 130 years ago or so.

Yeah we get it. Some of you think disabled people should stay inside and stare at the walls like in the good old black and white olden days.

Greywhippet · 06/07/2023 22:59

Totally agree OP YANBU to want these climate destroying murder tanks off the road

beethecrackon24995 · 06/07/2023 23:00

I hate 4x4s pain in the arse. I'm sure the vehicles are fab but they very frequently seem.to attract showy types who drive them. A sense of superiority but i rarely see one driving a sensible speed limit instead tailgating is pretty common. They over hang supermarket parking spaces so it makes it often harder navigating parking. And for some strange reason they often double park or park on double yellow lines instead of making their way to the car park like the rest of us
Before 4x4 owners accuse me predictably of being jealous I'm very lucky and don't need to be envious of such things. I choose to drive a smaller regular vw as I don't gravitate to status symbols 😁

Catinabeanbag · 06/07/2023 23:01

JeandeServiette · 06/07/2023 21:27

they're so high with massive grills / bars on the front.

Bull bars have been illegal for more than 15 years.

I meant bumper - sorry
