Reported crime - should I speak to neighbour?

Hi all,

Last night at around 2.30am I awoken to the sound of loud banging on my street. Turns out it was possibly 2 males trying to break into my neighbours garage.

Obviously I called 999 and reported and two police vans showed up. I dont know if anyone was arrested or what as I didn't see.

I looked at neighbours garage this morning and the men (presume there was more than one as there was speaking/shouting as it was all happening) have partially bent the door exposing a gap between the door and the floor. It is also badly bent from when they appeared to be kicking it.

My question is do I need to let my neighbour know? They might not have seen it as the back of their house is at the front of mine iyswim. Will the police inform them instead? I'm.guessing they need to report to their insurers as well.

I didnt get a look at the perpetrators but I know my other neighbour has a security cam which likely would have captured the guys on it.

Do I need to do anything in the absence of knowing whether police caught these men or not? Or just let the police deal with it?

Assuming you have a decent relationship with your neighbours why not go and speak to them? I think the police will find out who it belongs to and speak to them as well, but why not do it too just in case?

I dont actually know these particular neighbours as they are on the road behind my house. I think I will speak to them though in the event that they slept through the noise and dont know what happened. I think the police would tell them though, surely. Does anyone know? Never dealt with an attempted break in before.

Of course go tell them it would be super weird not to

KrisAkabusi · 06/07/2023 13:00

I can't understand why you wouldn't tell them? So what if you don't know them already, just call round.

Or is there about to be a massive dripfeed of 'anxiety'?

PatrickGammon · 06/07/2023 13:03

I've assumed police will deal with letting them know cos surely they would do. But considering the time of when the offence took place they may not have done. I will go tonight after work and just let them know and tell them the other neighbours have a security cam which hopefully got some footage

Why would you not? Even if the police informed them (wouldn't be confident on that) it might be nice to know someone was looking out for them.

If you were my neighbour, whether I knew or not, I would thank you for coming to talk to me.

Wow, what's with the nastiness? It's a simple question. I just wanted to know should I just let the police sort it? I only saw the vans arrive but didnt see what happened and then I heard them leave so I'm not sure what they have/havent done. But as I've already said upthread I WILL go and speak to them after work.

Update: I informed the neighbour what had happened, he is quite elderly and slept through it all. He said the police hadn't been in touch whatsoever so I said id call them to find out what had happened.

The police informed me they detained some people at the scene and gave me a ref number. I've passed this on to my neighbour so he can put a claim through his insurance for the garage door. He was so grateful. I also gave him my neighbour with the camera address so he could call in on her for footage as she wasnt in when I tried. I will try her again tomorrow.

I would have thought the police would have let him know themselves but I am relieved they detained the perpetrators at the scene.

Why wouldn’t you speak to your neighbours about this?

I bet he was really grateful to you both for calling the police and then going round. Hopefully it’s all easily fixed and they catch the people concerned.

What's with resurrecting all these zombie threads??

GrannyRose15 · 01/03/2024 12:16

What's with pointing it out? Mine's a mistake. What's your excuse?

RollOnSpringDays · 01/03/2024 12:24

In this world where people need to ask an internet forum whether to have a face to face interaction with someone, I really do despair.
