Late payment help

Anxiousmummy1187 · 06/07/2023 09:18

My payment for my credit card was due 29 June completely slipped my mind and woke up at 2am this morning thinking ong I’ve not paid so I’ve paid it had to pay interest. Now I’m wondering if it will go against me now I’ve never missed a payment and so cross with myself as honestly just slipped my mind. ITs with tsb but I’ve seen some places give you 10-14 days grace to make it if accounts been up to date which it has. Tsb first said it would affect me then said not sure if it will. I can’t believe it never missed a payment and don’t set up a payment as I usually pay more off it. Anyone know.

If it's your first time then no it won't affect anything

Eventingmum · 06/07/2023 09:20

A one time only won't go against you credit wise, however they will probably have charged you a late payment fee.
I once did this and rang them to ask for the charge to be refunded and they did as they could see I normally paid on time and it was a one off

Fightyouforthatpie · 06/07/2023 09:20

What do you mean by "go against me"?

nutbrownhare15 · 06/07/2023 09:23

As a one off even if it goes on your credit file I doubt it would impact on your ability to get credit in the future. Set up a direct debit covering the minimum payment today so that this never happens again. You can always pay more when you want to.

tuliparcher · 06/07/2023 09:26

I set up a direct debit to pay the minimum payment so that if I forget to pay at least something has gone out

wutheringkites · 06/07/2023 09:27

You should always set up a payment for the minimum to avoid this. If you can pay more than that, you can put it through as a separate payment at any point in the month.

ChaToilLeam · 06/07/2023 09:29

You’ll likely be charged a late fee but it’s a one off, people forget, it’s normal. Set up a minimum payment - that’s what I did, as I also always forgot. It hasn’t affected my rating or anything else.

You sound rather anxious, is that usual for you?

Sissynova · 06/07/2023 09:31

You need to set up a direct debit that automatically takes the minimum and then you can make a payment to clear the rest or however much else you want.
There is zero need to remember to manually make payments by X date in this day and age.

Anxiousmummy1187 · 06/07/2023 10:03

Yes I suffer with anxiety so it’s caused major anxiety thinking I’d be black listed 🤣

Frabbits · 06/07/2023 10:07

You'll be charged a late fee and it will go on your credit file as a missed payment, but if it's a once off will not really impact anything. It will drop off eventually.

You should have a direct debit set up though to take the min payment so this can't happen.

badluckorbadvibes · 06/07/2023 10:08

You keep mentioning 'missed' payments in the OP but your thread title is correct, it is a LATE payment. Nothing will be affected by this other then you having to pay interest as you found out.

Missed payments will be reported. One late payment will not be.

FatCatBum · 06/07/2023 10:13

and don’t set up a payment as I usually pay more off it.

You should absolutely set up the minimum payment by direct debit to avoid situations like this, then just make another payment of whatever extra you want to make

OlympicProcrastinator · 06/07/2023 10:18

There is no such thing as ‘black listed’ OP but a late or missed payment is sometimes reported on your credit file straight away or sometimes only after they’ve reminded you. It depends on the company policy.

Any late or missing payment stays on your credit file for 6 years and how it impacts future lenders totally depends on their criteria for lending.

I think it’s missed as it wasn’t paid within the month as payment is due at end of month. So the woman said she thinks it may be classed as missed

I've set up the minimum payment for mine so can't forget. Then I pay more off each month. I get anxious and this is one less thing to worry about.

It's a late payment. A missed payment is where it isn't paid at all.

LIZS · 06/07/2023 10:22

You will get charged interest but doubt it would be a default.

MumblesParty · 06/07/2023 10:35

I did this once. Just totally forgot. I rang them and begged and pleaded, they could see I’d had a credit card for years and never paid late before, so they refunded the charge as a goodwill gesture.

AppleCinnamonBagel · 06/07/2023 11:15

If you normally pay it in full then just set up your direct debit for the full amount.

Anxiousmummy1187 · 06/07/2023 11:17

I spoke to someone online and wasn’t very sympathetic ha

OP posts:
Anxiousmummy1187 · 06/07/2023 12:52

I rang and she’s refunded the interest but said they think it might go as a default as it wasn’t paid in same month. But she said she isn’t sure how much as it was only 80
pound

Set up a direct debit for the minimum, you can always pay extra if you want to.

She sounds clueless. This isn't a default.
