To ask what to do with itching when OTC remedies not working?!

Also AIBU to think anti-itch dreams and anti-histamine tablets should be sorting me out! Not working at all. Back from holiday a few days. Had what I think was heat rash briefly over there, but went away quickly. Now I’m itchy all over for about 3 days- that intense eye watering itch!! And I have random red pimple
like spots popping up in random areas of my body. Not bites as there are new ones emerging all the time. Not a huge amount but still. They are severely itchy. Not hives. Tried numerous pharmacy remedies- all to no avail! What can help! Also, anyone had similar and what might it be?

Eurax for itching.

I had this when I had COVID. It was literally the only symptom that I had and I probably wouldn't have even tested because I would have assumed that it was an allergic reaction, but my son had tested positive and he had the classic flu-like symptoms. It was a nightmare for 3 or 4 days but then it just went away on its own.

DustyLee123 · 05/07/2023 16:15

Have you asked the pharmacist to look at it ?

Lis1992 · 05/07/2023 16:17

@DustyLee123 yep tried that too!

@steff13 Really?! And you’d no other symptoms at all? I’m not sick in any way, just this itching.

Have you tried Anthisan?

hedgehoglurker · 05/07/2023 16:21

What antihistamines are you taking? Some are once daily, some are taken several times per day, and some can be taken together.

Uselessatthisstuff · 05/07/2023 16:23

Google PMLE sun allergy.

KeepSellChuck · 05/07/2023 16:41

Not sure it is helpful for "all-over" itching, but I suffer very badly from insect bites and have really struggled to find something that actually works. Antihisan and the various equivalents do nothing.

One day in desperation I tried some Nurofen muscle pain relief gel. OMG - instant relief. Pretty sure it's not a good idea to use long-term, but then I found some muscle and joint gel in (I think) Wilko's.

It has arnica, glucosamine, devil's claw, eucalyptus, rosemary and menthol.

It feels cool when you squeeze it on and it smells quite nice too.

Maybe you should consult a doctor?

Severe all over itching can be a sign of liver problems, for example.

QueenOfHiraeth · 05/07/2023 16:47

A friend of mine had similar after a holiday in Greece, turned out to be scabies.
Have a Google and see are your little red spots like that? She said her itch was merciless!
You can buy treatment over the counter for it

BlackeyedSusan · 05/07/2023 16:52

Psoriasis? Mine came on rapidly. It he'd like hell initially. Prescription from GP.

Definitely see your GP.

Could be bed bugs, scabies, (from holiday),Post viral rash, psoriasis, lichen planus, or other bloody things.

Lis1992 · 05/07/2023 17:01

@BlackeyedSusan @QueenOfHiraeth Are scabies not only from prolonged skin contact though?

OP posts:
TiredArse · 05/07/2023 17:44

Piriton ( Chlorphenamine, not the other type) is the best thing for itching. However you probably need someone to have a look if you’re still coming out in spots.

TempestuousBehaviour · 05/07/2023 18:12

I get nerve itching and find cold compress helps… maybe try a cold shower?

KimberleyClark · 05/07/2023 18:21

Have you tried E45 Anti Itch Cream? I find that works for me.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 05/07/2023 18:25

Could well be scabies…. can be caught from mattresses and bedding, so having been on holiday and using a bed that someone with scabies has used can do it.

Scarlettpixie · 05/07/2023 18:38

GP.

I'm not sure but I don't think so.

FabFitFifties · 05/07/2023 19:11

Skin to skin transfer usually needs to be longer contact as you say OP, but people have, less commonly, caught scabies from bedding etc. Do you have any tracks between your fingers?

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 05/07/2023 19:13

Yeah I’d go show a pharmacist the rash (or a photo of if it’s less awkward) and get them to advise whether it’s a GP job or not.

Whereabouts did you go on holiday?

Daisybuttercup12345 · 05/07/2023 21:27

See your doctor. They can give you stronger medication than you can buy.
