AIBU to think a 2.5 year old doesn't need a pram?

Sissynova · 05/07/2023 09:02

Will have two months less than a 2.5 year age gap, nursery is a mile walk 5 days a week and we do all the usual days out on the weekend.
Would you just use the pram for the baby when you didn't want to carry them all day?
Is 2.5 too young to sit properly on a buggy board or walk 2 miles a day??Would a 2.5 year old need a pram to nap if you are out of the house all day?

So you don’t want to buy another single, don’t want the baby in a sling while you push the toddler - totally fair enough but that only leaves 2 options which are buggy board on your existing pram or buy a double.

You could always try the buggy board option, see how you go. It sounds like your 2YO is already a good walker and by 2.5 lots of kids have dropped their nap so where to sleep if out all day might not even be an issue. If it’s a pain you can buy a double. If you’re not too fussy on model/colour you’ll be able to get something online with quick delivery.

I find buggy board did my back in as it means you’re pushing buggy at such an odd angle.

Interesting I hadn't heard this before! My current pram is a yoyo due to travelling, do you think it would be worse as the handle bars aren't adjustable?

My toddler was 2.5y exact when baby sibling arrived (10w old!)

We use the buggyboard and pram so toddler can hop on and off if they want a rest.

For nursery drop-off, toddler scoots there (with my help from a pull along strap) and baby in carrier, home journey is buggy or walk. It's a 20m toddler walk (or a 5-10m unencumbered adult walk).

Still use the buggy occasionally but less and less!

UnbeatenMum · 05/07/2023 10:42

Two of my children still needed naps at 2.5 and all three of them still needed the buggy on days out at that age. None of them would have managed a mile walk before and after nursery.

I didn't say I would find it easy to use a double. I would rather avoid that at all costs due to storage and it seems many people felt the same and have helpful suggestions.

Pushing a buggy is very different to having a baby right against your abdomen when you're still recovering from surgery from my direct experience.

Just to clarify, I use Cybex Maira tie (I think that's what it's called 😅) and with newborn babies, the carrier sits right under the bust so wouldn't be anywhere near a scar. As they get older, it's closer to the waist but your scar would be healed by then. I'm sure this will be the same for all/most carriers as if it's too low, a newborn could have throuble breathing.

Yes

In my direct experience, if the baby in the sling is resting anywhere near your abdomen, the sling needs adjusting….

OP, the options are:
Double buggy
Baby in sling, toddler in buggy
Toddler on buggy board, baby in pram

There isn’t a secret fourth option if none of those work for you.

I had a bugaboo bee with the soft cocoon insert - it fits in the basket of the buggy so you can swap between baby and toddler mode when you’re out and about. I forgot all buggies aren’t so flexible, I found it brilliant being able to chop and change so easily.

That sounds really handy actually, could use the pram with baby during the day but then collect toddler and put them in it for the walk home. Initially I was toying between a bugaboo bee and the yoyo but ultimately went with the yoyo due to flying regularly. Now wondering if the bee would have been the better option!

It didn't need adjusting I'm just short and therefore that is where the baby comes to in a carrier. Odd thing for people to keep claiming isn't true.

I used to walk everywhere when mine were little, and they had a 2.5yr age gap. I used a decent double buggie, one of those light weight, off road, 3 wheel types, and loved it. I had a couple of years use out of it as up to 4yo my eldest would still need to rest on a long walk.

StillTryingtoBuy · 05/07/2023 09:05

Don’t get a double - sling for baby, buggy board and then you have options.

This. We have a 23 month gap. Our pushchair is lie flat from birth so no extra seats?

I initially thought the scooter would be the best option but nursery have just stopped letting you keep them there which is annoying timing! DH would be bringing toddler in and I would be picking up so it would have been handy to use the scooter and leave it at nursery.

No way could my 2yo walk a mile after being at nursery. And 2yos walk really slow.
Baby in carrier, toddler in pram.

DaaamnYoullDo · 05/07/2023 10:49

Also, if you're pushing a baby in a pram are you going to be able to effectively keep a 2yo safe beside a road, they don't just walk in a straight line where they're supposed to.

megletthesecond · 05/07/2023 10:50

Buggy boards are a nightmare as you can't take big strides and they mess up your posture. I borrowed one and lasted to the end of the street then turned round and swapped back again.

Is the YoYo the only pram you have? If is then
I think that changes everything and unfortunately no question do you need a new pram. The buggy board is awful and you have to twist to push it. It’s manageable if you have 3.5 year old that might hop on just for short distances on long days out but you’ll find yourself in need of physio if you attempt to push it miles every day.

Devto21t · 05/07/2023 10:53

Yeah ideally you need to try each option before you buy if you can to work out what’s best for you in your circumstances.

Pinkywoo · 05/07/2023 10:54

I have exactly the same gap between my two and didn't buy a double, DS1 went on the buggy board (ours he stands on not sitting) and DS2 in the pram. They're now 1 and 3 and it still works for nursery runs, and I can walk at a normal pace rather than stopping to look at every leaf/twig/puddle!

redskytwonight · 05/07/2023 10:54

Personally if you're concerned about getting a 2.5 year old and a baby to nursery (and that's the main place you walk) then I'd take the 2.5 year old out of nursery while you're on maternity leave.

WhimHoff · 05/07/2023 10:55

My 3 year old often used to sit in the little luggage bit under the seat when tired.

FlounderingFruitcake · 05/07/2023 10:55

Oh and re scooter a folding one could go under the pram. But it still doesn’t help you if they declare themselves tired of scooting as you can’t use a pull lead while pushing the pram.

adomizo · 05/07/2023 10:56

Out and about double buggy would be my choice here. For an easier life I would plan around getting a double (2nd hand) as having two was a handful esp the first 6 months and I didn't like slings either. Speaking from experience as I didn't have a double for a younger age gap and look back and think why !? What was I thinking !!

Oh that is good to know! Long days sound like a nightmare with it then 😅

We have a mamas and papas flip at the inlaws, but haven't used it in around a year. I suppose because that forward faces I could have baby in it under 6 months, I just wouldn't put them in a yoyo toddler seat before then.

Mine are 22 months apart.
I'd definitely get a double. It's easier if you are in a busy area, walking far, they are tired, it's raining.

I'm not concerned, that sounds a lot more extreme, I obviously just have 1 at the minute and it is straight forward so just trying to see what will make the most sense when baby arrives.
Taking toddler out isn't an option as if we don't keep paying she loses her place and I would rather toddler had some structure to their week while I'm off. They love nursery and they had 1 on 1 time when they were a baby so I want the same for no 2.
