To think schools release reports right at the end of term to avoid being answerable to parents on what's in them

Why do schools do this? Its 2 weeks until end of term and still no reports.

It leaves no time to talk about interventions that might be needed or strategies to try and improve things. It also doesn't give time for parents to support on weak areas at home.

In theory there should be no surprises as there are parents evenings, but ime those aren't reliable, its when something is written down it counts.

They should be provided by spring half term so there's time to plan for the following year.

There are many reasons why reports might be issued right at the end of term, some of which have been explained on here. It’s interesting that you have focused on the one that shows the school in the worst light.

Well when I look at my daughters handwriting, it's improved massively even over the last two weeks. I do think reports should come out int he last week of term because children, especially young ones, change and develop all the time and these developments and new skill should be reflected in the end of year report.

Well now she has the information and can help her child so the end of year report has done its job. She can get started over the summer, ready for the new school year.

Now she knows that end of year reports go out at the end of the year, she can find other ways of engaging through the year next year.

I actually agree that nothing in a report should be a shock.

End of year reports don't have to go out on the very last day though.

I taught for forty years, and no school that I ever taught at, sent the reports out on the day they broke up for summer. Nor did any of the schools that my DDs attended.
For starters they all required parents to confirm that they'd received them. Not really something that can be done in the holidays.

I've probably spent the equivalent of years writing reports, and yes the final report is important and needs to be an end of year thing. But OP is specifically frustrated that at her kids' school they come home on the last day. It's annoying to see some fellow teachers on here posting knee-jerk reactions without actually recognising what the problem is. To be honest, if my kids' school had dome this I'd have felt that it reeked of cowardice

Good to hear your views here.

My kids’ secondary sends out emails with controversial ‘info’ on a Friday at 1700 ;-)

yellowlegobrick in reply to your comment, I'm not over egging anything. I'm still marking the assessments that will go on the reports that will come out at the end of term. Years 7-10 couldn't sit them sooner because year 11 and 13 were using the hall in May/ June. Therefore, the reports go out in the last week's of term. Any sooner and they won't be accurate. I hope that clarifies things for you.
