Need to decide on a job asap

I'm a supply teacher, but honestly don't enjoy it, behaviour is atrocious.
I interviewed for an ECT role through my agency the other week, I was offered a maternity cover from September by the school. The first term I would still be classed as supply then (hopefully) moved over to the school's books as of January.
However I know how supply works and the school chose to offer me a maternity role rather than a permanent one, which was also available. The teacher could also come back earlier than planned.
I was stupid to accept the role, I haven't signed a contract and I am classed as supply so I am able to withdraw if I want, though I know I need to do this asap (preferably today). They will understandably be very unhappy and my name will be mud to them, but I know I will struggle with behaviour management and be working ridiculously long hours.
I interviewed for an AO Civil Service role in the Home Office for which I'm still waiting on the CTC checks. It's been a month so far, who knows when it'll be ready.
I'm planning to enquire if I can do this on a part time and potentially evening basis, they wrote in their ad that evening work could be on offer, it depends on the role.

I currently do tutoring around 15 hours per week which pays well, and I've been asked to continue it into September. I also have an interview for a community care role which pays £11.50 per hour.
I know people will ask why on earth I want to do care work when I have my qualifications, but I do enjoy this work, find it much less stressful than teaching, it keeps me fit as I do it on a bicycle, and I'm paid for every hour I do with a guaranteed increase every year.
It's also very flexible hours. I'm hoping to combine this with the tutoring or civil service, I really have no idea what to do.
If I do a combination of these roles for 45 hours per week, I will earn the same as an ECT teacher probably doing 55 hours per week.
I need to decide by tomorrow really.

The tutoring suits me much better as I'm working 1-1 with pupils, I enjoy it so much more.

Anybody please?

As someone who has been teaching 25 years, think of other options. Is tutoring and care work enough if the civil service job doesn’t come to fruition?

Ofashynessthatiscriminallyvulgar · 04/07/2023 21:46

If I combine them and do approx 45h per week, I will be on around the same wage as an ECT 1. And the hourly rate automatically goes up each year. Civil service will pay £22.4k for 37h , not sure how their pay scales work.

Will you have to work 45hrs a week all year round or term time only to match the ect wage?

Ofashynessthatiscriminallyvulgar · 04/07/2023 22:01

I suppose it would be year-round unfortunately. However as a teacher I guess I'd be working over the holidays too.

Hmm it is tricky.
Is this primary or secondary?
I think it depends on how awful you find teaching. And how much you would enjoy the other work. Don't worry too much about annoying the school as they are not even properly contracting you until January.

Boomboom22 · 04/07/2023 22:38

I'd say yes for now and not worry too much about pulling out in a few days if need be. They don't really want you. Keep applying to other schools though so you can get through ect. It gets easier after. All schools are different and tbh you're better somewhere new so they don't see you as a total trainee as it were.

Ofashynessthatiscriminallyvulgar · 04/07/2023 22:47

They offered me the maternity cover instead of the permanent contract for their own benefit I suppose. I was the only person interviewed on that day so nobody else was given the permanent role, unless they've since interviewed on different days.
It's secondary. All I read online is that behaviour has never been so bad, that teachers are leaving in their droves and so on.
I currently do the community care work and tutoring, I really enjoy both. Care work is hard but in a different way, and the company I'm interviewing for offers better pay and guaranteed hours.
True, there's no guarantee they'd even give me a contract in January. I've had it twice now where I was on long term supply and they dropped me with a day's notice, so I know it's not guaranteed.

I'm a primary school teacher and have never known teaching to be this bad in the 12 years that I've been doing the job. I almost gave it up 4 months ago.

I would say go with what you enjoy the most. Life is just too short to have any regrets.

Thanks :)
Sorry to hear it's so bad for you atm.

I would definitely say do what you enjoy .
