To ask if you you always buy new clothes for 'events'? (lighthearted, not a serious issue)!

I've got a non-significant birthday coming up.

My OH is really 'into' clothes. Always looks immaculate in terms of all types of 'grooming'. Loves clothes shopping. Buys new ones often, and seasonally.

I love clothes too, I quite like unusual, quirky things. Wear a lot of second hand and donated things from friends and family rather than new, for environmental as well as financial reasons although I do have some nicer or designer pieces too.

Find clothes shopping as in actual shops really frustrating and annoying, not 'fun' at all!

I mentioned that I wasn't sure what I'd wear on my birthday-we're just going to see an act at a (nice)pub with some friends, nothing fancy but I do want to look nice.

OH said a to buy something new. I mentioned I had a couple of dresses I've only worn once or twice. OH said I shouldn't be wearing the same things again and again and to get a new dress. I mentioned I was trying to save money (I was made redundant a couple of months ago and although I am not on the breadline I am being more careful!) and OH said they'd pay for it and to go shopping....Gave me a budget...

Where do you stand on things like this?
I know quite a few people who are financially very comfortable who feel the same, I don't think It's just down to finances.
But I know I might be a bit odd for not enjoying traipsing around shops looking at new clothes!

No, especially as I struggle to find things that I like and where the cut fits me. Like you, I like more fun and quirky things. In terms of fit and style, I have a pretty unisex/masculine style and I'm tall and broad-shouldered, so often struggle with fit.

RandomMess · 04/07/2023 18:03

I am a very short apple shape with ultra pale colouring so look awful in back and many other colours, love 60s stuff.

Shopping is utterly painful.

Miekle · 04/07/2023 18:04

It's not odd. It should be considered normal to feel guilty about excess and buying new, when the planet is in serious trouble. I'm not saying to never ever buy a scrap of new clothing (though I admire those who don't) but to refuse to wear any event clothes more than once is disgracefully selfish imho. Stick to your guns OP!

I buy a new outfit for a wedding normally but otherwise I don’t, seems very wasteful. Fair enough if you’ve nothing you would want to wear due to fit, style etc, but buying for the sake of buying is ridiculous and wasteful.

" I mentioned I had a couple of dresses I've only worn once or twice. OH said I shouldn't be wearing the same things again and again"

This from your OH is a ridiculous attitude. It might make sense if you had one nicer going-out top and you wore it every time, or even two that you alternated, but it seems like you have a decent sized wardrobe with things that have been worn occasionally only.

Grumpyfroghats · 04/07/2023 18:08

I actively dislike wearing something new for a special occasion. I like to get to know an outfit before I feel my best in it - I really I now sound really weird

I find shopping in actual shops incredibly boring these days. Much prefer to trawl the charity shops. Found a gorgeous calf-length leather coat, excellent condition, for £24.99 yesterday. That’s winter sorted.

But also, it’s just more fun isn’t it! Coming across an absolute gem for a fraction of the high street price, rather than traipsing round the shops looking at variations on the same theme.

I know there are lots of quirky internet places - tbh there are too many, I just can’t keep up!

HunkaMunkasslipper · 04/07/2023 18:11

Seems I am not the odd one then (or I've found my people)!

I too LOVE charity shops! They are much more fun and better environmentally wise.

I completely get the 'getting to know an outfit' feeling too!

And yes, I do have a good selection in my wardrobe-I'd understand if I had one 'good' going out outfit or such but that's not the case.

I am not saying that if you really want an item of clothing you shouldn't just go and get it, our high street needs some support too but in this sort of situation, just buying new so you have something new, I can't get on board with that!

Why waste resources, time and money when you've got something suitable?

I wouldn't buy new unless I needed something. I wear classic things for a reason.

Curiosity101 · 04/07/2023 18:16

I only buy new if I need to. But then I definitely wouldn't say I'm into fashion at all.

marshmallowfinder · 04/07/2023 18:18

Of course not! I haven't bought new clothes for a couple of years at least, apart from undies. There's no point if you've got perfectly good stuff.

5128gap · 04/07/2023 18:19

I tend to have a smallish wardrobe of clothes I love and wear until they're out of date/getting to past their best and only then replace. This means I would almost certainly already have something that I'd be very happy to wear and would feel great in. So no I'd certainly not buy new for the sake and leave one of my existing beauties in the wardrobe.

Orangewall · 04/07/2023 18:28

I don’t tend to buy new things for events unless it’s a special occasion - I have basics that work in different combinations. I also get really attached to clothes and wear them to death 😂 @Grumpyfroghats absolutely get this, my only ‘new’ outfit was bought for a wedding recently and I hated that I didn’t have a chance to break it in beforehand!
I love vinted, I have a destination wedding next year and am enjoying the secondhand bargains immensely.
