Fly crawled all over new bread - semi lighthearted

One of those horrible smaller-blue bottle summer flies has been in our house all day

I left a new loaf of bread in the kitchen. A posh supermarket boule. I walked in to see the dreaded fly crawling all over it. My mistake entirely for not putting the bread away in a cupboard. Now I KNOW flies can land in anything. I really feel icky about eating it but also hate food waste. Would you eat it?

YABU - yes I would and wouldn’t think twice
YANBU - no, feed it to the birds and put it away next time

obvs lighthearted post!

It wasn’t in a wrapper FYI it just had the barcode on a bit of paper stuck to the actual bread

Those blue ones are absolutely gross and lay eggs etc.

If you don’t want to throw away the whole thing, just cut out the entire top crust. Then maybe you can carve the remains into a bowl and do that soup in a bread bowl thing.

This is what I’m thinking plus we have fields at the back of our house and who knows what the fly has been in before flying into our house. I mean there could have been a fly in the shop, right. But I didn’t know about that!

And they always hang around dog poo

7Worfs · 03/07/2023 21:35

Yes, you can’t unsee it 👀
But hey, bread bowl! You can melt cheese in it too.

JMSA · 03/07/2023 21:36

I don't think they'd lay their eggs on the hard crust of bread. Don't they prefer somewhere soggy and rank?

I'd give it a wipe and eat it. Mind you, I'm on a diet and starving, so even the eggs would be protein WinkGrin

Plankingplanks · 03/07/2023 21:37

You bought it from a shop without a wrapper? A fly is probably the least of your worries! I'd be more worried about the humans sneezing all over it!

carparkcow · 03/07/2023 21:37

I wouldn't think twice about this, just shoo it off and crack on 😳

HollyBookBlue · 03/07/2023 21:39

Extra protein isn't it 🤞

Jobreveal · 03/07/2023 21:40

Don't eat it. We had this poster up in our cookery room when I was at school and it's always stuck with me!

Definitely not. They go all over faeces! Really, really terrible idea to eat it. Treat yourself to a fresh new one!

Ylvamoon · 03/07/2023 21:41

Eat it quickly! Beforethe maggots hatch!!

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 03/07/2023 21:41

You brought it unwrapped... flies have already been on it
And the barcode was just stuck to the crust you were planning to eat? Gross

eyesfullofstars · 03/07/2023 21:47

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest but I accept that I have very low standards compared to most people. I’ve never gotten sick off a loaf of bread though!

Wouldn't have even crossed my mind not to eat it. Your body is set up to deal with minor hygiene infringements.

This was my very thought. It's been handled by multiple people no doubt and could have had countless flies landing on it. Tbf im not sure I'd eat and unwrapped load with a bar code stuck directly to it anyway 😅

Wenfy · 04/07/2023 09:04

A loaf bought without a wrapper from a supermarket has probably had unwashed human hands all over it. I’ve seen toddlers scratch their arses, pick up bread and then put it back. So a blue bottle fly is the least of your worries.

No that is what flies do

Tutu365 · 04/07/2023 09:09

I remember that poster from my yoof too. Definitely the health messaging we were getting at the time as ‘fact’ and not remotely satire.

strawberrywhisk · 04/07/2023 09:12

My son found a crispy fly in the airfryer after cooking a piece of fish yesterday. Goodness knows why because it was spotless when he started to use it.

strawberrywhisk · 04/07/2023 09:14

The airfyer not the fly btw

mononymous · 04/07/2023 09:18

Flies get on all unwrapped baked goods put on display for hours on end. So Marks & Spencer bakery, Lidl bakery. Walk past any high street bakers with a window display and flies will be there. It makes me feel sick to think about it but I have to put it out of my mind or I'd never be able to eat any of it

It's bought! Then yes, she brought it home.
