Kids screeching

Is it my imagination or is there an increase in children who cannot play without screeching and screaming their head off. I'm not talking about ordinary 'children playing out' noise but ear piercing shrieking over and over.
I live beside a green and this Summer have nearly been driven to distraction some days by children doing this. Sometimes it goes on until 9 o clock at night, so not just younger children. No parent ever comes out to put a stop to it, so presumably they think it's ok. Am I just getting over sensitive to noise, or is this genuinely something new?

It’s your imagination as you indicated

SoSoSoSo · 03/07/2023 20:43

Tips welcome

Do you make them go inside when they persist? I would after one warning then inside for a while. They scream again. In they go. And repeat for as long as necessary.

Tabitha2721 · 03/07/2023 20:44

I will add - it’s less screaming, more playing super loudly and lots of “arghhhh” when playing pirates and other imaginary games. Not just pointless screaming. I don’t want them to stop - just bring it down a decibel or two 🙈

Vettrianofan · 03/07/2023 20:49

My youngest two are like that in the house! Never mind outside. I don't enjoy it either, btw. I ask them to tone it down. But they don't listen.

Supersimkin2 · 03/07/2023 20:53

We’ve got a screecher in our flats. It keeps 120 households on edge till 9 at night.

Meh, antisocial. The landlords will have a go shortly cos unlike the rest of us they can complain with teeth.

The parents are pretty half-witted and had to be told not to leave their fourth floor flat windows open when they also have twin toddlers.

That was relaxing too.

Triflefan · 03/07/2023 20:56

YANBU
This really made me chuckle though because I’m thrilled it’s not just me struggling with this.
we live near the loudest children in the world! At first we thought it was quite funny but now it drives us mad.
Last weekend the parents let them loose before 7AM.
The girls screech and the boy just roars like he charging at something. This is constant though. We’re at least 400 yards from them so god knows how their immediate neighbours feel?! They are extraordinarily loud 😳

fitzwilliamdarcy · 03/07/2023 20:56

@Supersimkin2 I didn’t think kids were counted in the rules around noise nuisance? That’s what I’ve been told re: my neighbour and her two screamers.

VikingLady · 03/07/2023 21:17

It's not new. We had complaints from the neighbours at Brownies for screeching. And there was a park a couple of streets away and we could hear screeching kids on calm summer evenings.

Dumbphone · 03/07/2023 21:24

Ha! I couldn’t agree more with you all. All my children’s friends know if you’re in my house - no screaming! When one of their pals lets a scream out my kids stop what they’re doing and the screamer gets reminded of my rules, by kids first then me if I’ve heard it. It’s actually quite funny by now but at first the friends were really shocked as had obviously never been told off for this before.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/07/2023 21:34

There are teenagers who sit outside my house at night and just talk/laugh/scream so loudly. Last night it was until 10pm. I was so close to going out!

ItsCueNotQue · 03/07/2023 09:56

"Stop squealing otherwise you'll have to come inside".

Child screams again.

Child goes inside.

Child learns not to scream.

Hmm

Child is not bothered and spends rest of the day watching TV or on ipad.

Everyone judges mum because the child's brain has turned to mush and they have gained weight and have a vitamin D deficiency.

Mum loses it and forces kids out in the garden again to get some fresh air.

Rinse and repeat.

maimeo · 03/07/2023 21:49

Read the entire thread and have no problem saying YANBU at all, OP. However, what I find irritating is that families in general have upped their noise level hugely in the last few years, and parents and kids alike are shouting to make themselves heard when they meet up. Another poster mentioned TV programmes being noisy and I would agree. Adults greeting children these days seem to shout "Hi, Benjamin.....how's it going, man .... give me a hi five" in a faux American accent at the top of their voice. I feel like shushing the adult! What's wrong with approaching a child, hunkering down and quietly asking him how he is today. Rant over!!

I haven't noticed this at all. Yes sometimes kids are noisy but no more than when I was at school.

Avondale89 · 03/07/2023 22:14

My god. There are some absolute lunatics on this website.

ItsCueNotQue · 03/07/2023 22:37

There's a middle ground between turfing your kids outside and letting them squeal all day and plonking them in front of screens to play video games. In the Venn diagram, the overlap between the two is labelled "parenting".

FFS. You can so tell who the parents of the squealers are on this thread.

ItsCueNotQue · 03/07/2023 22:41

Bugger, it looks I was quoting @yogasaurus but my reply was actually meant for @Quinoawoman's post!

Upwiththelark76 · 03/07/2023 23:00

YANBU aww live next door to 3 screechers . In the garden at 8am on a weekend. Not a parent in sight . It’s really annoying and is spoiling our summer not to mention weekends !

ASimpleLampoon · 03/07/2023 23:06

Live next to a park and can confirm.

Ironically, my own DS does scream occasionally but he's autistic and makes that noise when having a meltdown and very distressed, so it puts me on edge every time as I need to go and check no one is badly hurt or distressed

AcrossthePond55 · 04/07/2023 00:41

YANBU. DH and I are (US) RVers and all across the country kids seem to just be screeching and screaming at the top of their lungs as a normal part of play. Shouting is fine, that's usually part of whatever they're playing. Even an occasional screech is fine. It's the constant screaming that does me in.

In fact, in more than one instance they appeared to be having 'screaming contests'. I mean literally standing in a circle screaming one at a time for no other reason than to see who can scream the loudest.

Xeren · 04/07/2023 00:48

My 9 year old nephew had a Halloween party and the kids were just running up and down the stairs screaming their heads off. I put it down to sugar highs from all the Halloween sweets. At one point I caught him hiding in one of the rooms. I thought he was being picked on, but he just wanted some ‘quiet time’ away from the screaming.

Went to a 40th birthday a few weeks ago. There were a few kids running around and just screaming their heads off. I felt sorry for their throats!

I went to a lot of family functions as a kid and we would never be allowed to scream like that, the aunties would never have tolerated it! 😂

I am a parent of 2 screamers. They both have special needs and I have tried everything ! My older boy screamed only if something is wrong, however he is autistic so tiny things are often the end of the world to him. My daughter has ADHD and screams all the bloody time, inside and out. We have been told its just communication and to try to doeak very calmly to her in the hope she will speak calmly back, which is a hell of a lot harder than you think ! Children in general seem to play out later than they used to, our new neighbours kick footballs against our fence until well after my kids are in bed.

Outwiththenorm · 04/07/2023 06:34

I think it’s learned rather than innate in some kids - DS’s best friend is a screecher and DS always returns from playdates screeching for a few hours. I have seen the best friend’s mum tell him to pipe down a few times but to no avail.
