To drink alcohol 3 times per week

So my friend and I were discussing (over a glass of wine) how we both want to lose some weight and have a healthier lifestyle going forward. We wanted to settle a debate on whether drinking a bottle of wine every other day is normal? She seems to think it is but I think half of that would be more in the region of normal. I'm not much of a drinker so I wouldn't know really, but I'm curious to hear mumsnetters opinions.

So:

YABU: 1 bottle every other night is fine

YANBU: 1 bottle every other night seems a bit much

FYI - this is a lighthearted debate! Thanks in advance.

Assuming that's 3-4 bottles a week, that's far above the NHS recommended limit. Especially 1 bottle in 1 night constitutes a binge. Better to have 1 small glass a night, so 1 - 1.5 bottles a week total.

And wine is high in calories. I have initially lost weight in my pregnancy because of not drinking wine, it makes a big difference.

This information is quite interesting. If you're a regular big drinker, it's easy to imagine that everyone else does the same especially as in friendship groups that's often the case. The truth is that a woman drinking 30-40 units a week (3-4 binges a week) is a real outlier- it could well harm her health and will certainly slow her weight loss.

A bottle is 10 units, so that's at least 30 units a week. The recommended limit is 14 units, so yes, it's too much.

A whole bottle of wine three nights a week seems a LOT. I'd raise an eyebrow if DH started drinking that much.

Amazing how people can kid themselves that their alcohol intake is within the normal/healthy range. She’s delusional and possibly a functioning alcoholic.

One bottle every other night is not uncommon. Most people drink much more than they would ever admit to anyone else. But it is above what's recommended and it will absolutely have an impact on your health and your energy levels.

I used to drink much more than that. I don't drink anymore. I lost a stone in 8 weeks from doing nothing other than not drinking and still eating plenty of cake!

Even half a bottle every other night is a lot! That's almost 2 bottles a week. That's about 16 units, I think?
