To freeze spaghetti?

Zuloo · 02/07/2023 17:10

DH made spaghetti for lunch, with a small amount of tomato sauce and chopped up ham. We‘re going on holiday tomorrow so using up whatever is in the fridge.

However, he made enough to feed a small army! I don’t fancy eating it again for dinner and breakfast before we go away in the morning.

I don’t suppose it freezes well….?

It'll be fine, do it.

JanesBlond · 02/07/2023 17:11

Pasta freezes absolutely fine!

Totaly · 02/07/2023 17:11

You buy frozen pasta so why shouldn’t it be ok?

zurala · 02/07/2023 17:12

Ugh no, I can't imagine eating defrosted pasta. Bin it.

Fiddlesticks82 · 02/07/2023 17:13

Tupperware and have for lunch?

but no I wouldn’t freeze

Fiddlesticks82 · 02/07/2023 17:13

How come he made so much?

No idea. Trying not to be annoyed. He likes to go in about avoiding food waste then does stuff like this 🙄

You can buy frozen lasagne and other pasta ready meals. I probably wouldn’t freeze pasta I made at home though

Totally fine! Pasta bakes freeze really well. I know this isn’t a bake, but it’s the same thing.

LoopyLoup · 02/07/2023 17:27

I freeze home made spag Bol all the time. Which I then reheat in microwave. My only thought though is the ham… as I have never reaheated ham🤔

BlameItOnTheGoose · 02/07/2023 17:29

I wouldn't personally. I hate wasting food too but know that I'd never end up defrosting and eating frozen leftover spaghetti. But hey if you want to, go for it...

oopslateagain · 02/07/2023 17:29

It freezes brilliantly. DH and DD take leftovers for their lunches every day, spaghetti is a favourite so I always make a huge pot and freeze it in tupperware lunch boxes. They say it microwaves well straight from frozen and tastes absolutely fine.

Createausername1970 · 02/07/2023 17:32

Freeze it in individual portions, you have nothing to lose. Try one portion for a lunch one day. You will then know whether the other portions are good enough for a main meal, ok for a lunch, or should be binned.

CMOTDibbler · 02/07/2023 17:32

Stir the sauce in and it will be fine to freeze

Scottishskifun · 02/07/2023 17:35

Completely fine to freeze and bizarrely the freezing process then reheated from frozen in the microwave makes it better for you!
It reduces the sugars in it and doesn't give as high a sugar spike after. It's a well known trick used by diabetics/ gestational diabetes. I used to call it the ice fairy method!
Just splash a tablespoon of water on when reheating

Oblomov23 · 02/07/2023 17:35

It'll be fine.
But actually I find pasta doesn't freeze very well. Spag Bol sauce fine. But fully made spag Bol doesn't defrost very well. When I freeze a spag Bol, when I defrost it, I find it watery and the pasta part not very nice.

Cinnamope · 02/07/2023 17:37

Totally fine!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/07/2023 17:43

It'll be fine

Zuloo · 02/07/2023 18:18

Thanks! I’m going to give it a go. Will be handy to have some food ready for when we get home from our holiday.

I've never frozen pasta because its quick enough to cook from fresh and I assumed it would be soggy next time round.

But to me the obvious solution would be for DH to freeze it in meal size portions since it is a problem of his making, then he has a ready supply of lunches.

creativebutterfly · 02/07/2023 23:07

I've refrigerated cooked spaghetti before and if I haven't used it within a few days I bin it, but never frozen it. I guess it can be done but would make sure it's defrosted and then heated up very throughly !

Changepassword · 02/07/2023 23:27

I've frozen cooked pasta with no sauce lots of times, first time, DD cooked far too much. I put it in a food bag and froze it. When ready to use it just put in a pan of boiling water for 30 seconds to a minute and it's perfect.
Now if I'm cooking pasta, I cook enough to freeze a couple of portions
