Subsidised Prom tickets

A school local to us has incentivised prom tickets buy giving discounted tickets based on how many extra classes / revisions sessions were attended by pupils over the holidays and after school.
All attended = free tickets. A couple of sessions missed = £10 ticket etc on a sliding scale to £30 which is the full cost.

With schools crying out for extra funding, claiming lack of budgets etc AIBU to think there is a million things this money would be better spent on?

Effectively they have hoped that by subsidising the cost the students have gone to extra revision sessions, helping individual and the schools GCSE results.

That might be considered good value for money.

I think it's a great idea. The poorest in society tend to have less interest in their kids education, so they might encourage kids to attend these more if it saves them a few quid.

If it helps motivate students to revise - and as such in the long run help the school. Then surely it’s win/win.

ds school is currently running a competition in English for those who get enough points on the reading app or a few other criteria to get a free book from the book fair. School know the benefits of reading so if incentives help then it’s worth it

Wow

What incentive (or “prize”) do they offer for those who have ZERO interest in attending a prom?
A free ticket to prom certainly wouldn’t have encouraged me to do extra revision - if anything I would have avoided revision sessions more.
(Not the point of the thread I know)

No incentive is going to incentivise 100% of the target.

Maybe there is a correlation between those who value prom and those who need incentivising to go to extra revision sessions? <Pure speculation here, I have no data.>

If the extra revision sessions are high quality and students who attend them are increasing their chances of attaining good grades then it's excellent value.

Mamabird2022 · 02/07/2023 18:56

When I was in school (10 years ago) my prom was based on attendance. If you had 95%-100% attendance prom would be free However if you had less than 95% the tickets were £40

FawnFrenchieMum · 02/07/2023 19:54

I would imagine the kids who are not bothered about attending revision sessions would also not be that bothered by their parents spending £30.00 on the ticket!
