Please help. There were hundreds in my hallway today and a few in kitchen, I hoovered them up. What can I do?

Find out where they're getting in and make sure it's sealed. Clean the floor, make sure there's no food residue or anything and put some ant killer around the entry points.

Get traps off Amazon. They take the poison back to nest and it kills the others. It’s the only thing that worked for me after sealing up gaps etc etc.

FunkyBuddha85 · 02/07/2023 13:01

I bought ant killer powder at the Poundland. Sprinkled it all around where the ants were. They walk in it and take it back to wherever they came from and kill the others, or at least prevent them from coming back. It worked a treat! They were all gone in a few hours and haven't returned over a week later.
Do be careful that children or pets don't get it though.

They get in here through the front door from underneath the path/giant mound that the house was built on as part of anti flood planning. Much as I'd love to seal that up sometimes, it does actually need to open!

DP has sometimes put something more appealing (and sometimes spiked if it's been a particularly bad year) for them outside and then cleaned the floor to try and erase their trails. It's not that long until Flant Day, I reckon.

Ant powder if you can keep any pets and children away from it. I really wanted the traps to work and persevered for a while, but found the powder far more effective.

ChangeIsInevitable · 02/07/2023 13:11

Garlic. Put them anywhere and you'll no longer find ants.

5foot5 · 02/07/2023 13:14

I second ant traps.

I sympathise. We had this once. Little bastards came along the hall, in to the kitchen and even in the fridge.

Is there a nest outside somewhere. Loose sandy soil around paving slabs is often a sign.

I had this last year, it was a nightmare. Bait Stations and Ant powder worked. Also, make sure you empty your vacuum cleaner because they don't necessarily die in a vacuum, I learnt that the hard way.

The Bait Stations will make it worse for a few days but then they start to work. Sprinkle Ant powder in and outside the house.

Good luck, it is not fun.

@NeverDropYourMooncup it'll be the door you want to secure in that case - problem is the little arseholes find the tiniest cracks!

BiteyShark · 02/07/2023 13:16

Use Ant traps. We put them under cupboards so the dog can't get at them.

We have the yearly migration of ants from outside looking for somewhere inside and powder usually works but this year it didn't but within three days of putting the ant bait traps down I didn't see another one inside. I still have nests outside in the garden but at least for now they haven't sent a party inside.

Thank you everyone! I know I sound melodramatic but I feel sick!

Loose sandy soil around paving slabs is often a sign.

yes I’ve seen so many of these sandy soil things on my patio.

my mum just suggested I use bleach to mop up floor - what do You all think?

I’ve just bought ant baits from my local garden centre. I’ll try that then order some any powder.

Yes bleach or something strong smelling to mop the floor such as menthol as it covers the scent trail. As well as traps

Intemperatefatty · 02/07/2023 15:24

We get this yearly. My go to method is a freshly boiled kettle of water on the loose sandy mounds where the fuckers like to hide in the front and back garden. Very effective with no need for chemicals. Might need to repeat a few times if they come back.

Pennyplant19 · 02/07/2023 15:27

If you don't want to use poison, this stuff is great. Actually a food supplement but kills insects

Diatomaceous Earth is non toxic if you have kids or pets so you can use it anywhere.. not a problem even if ingested.

LightSpeeds · 02/07/2023 16:14

Spray them and where they're coming in with household anti-bac. They'll disappear!
