Toddler did a big wee on my sofa 😭

This is not an aibu but an oh help what do I do.

Don't know if I mentioned it under this user name but we moved recentishly and the house is a money pit. We are skint.

However it was my dream to have a sofa. I know that ~northern upholstey~ DFS do 4 years free credit so we went there and unlike our old second hand sofa (which we left in our old house as we couldn't get it down from the 3rd floor flat) from the BHF, it isn't leather. It isn't leather because we didn't have the budget, even on 0% finance. What it is however is a lovely cosy velvety thing in dark blue.

But reader, WHAT was I thinking?! 2.5 y.o. has been getting on OK with potty training. It's summer so he's running around with just a t-shirt and slippers 🤣 on, and as the days pass more of the wee and poo is going into the potty. The carpet has taken one or two for the team, but I've got Dr beckman on my side, and this carpet came with the house. If it does shrink and pull away from the walls from splashes of liquid, it's all ammo to get a new one.

Yesterday, grandparents came round. No real problem with his bare butt, but a query - why hasn't he got any knickers? You were in knickers right away as a toddler.

Really mother? I find that hard to believe.

Yes, really.

Ok so today I thought I'd try him with a pair of those absorbent training cotton knickers.

He and big brother were playing on the carpet. I went to the kitchen for mere seconds to grab the tea I'd forgotten there.

When I came back he had sneaked onto the sofa and done the most enormous wee.

This sofa appears to have the absorbency of a sponge.

How on earth can I clean this?? Help! Tell me you've had the same?!

We have barely lost the smell of the vendor's cat, only to replace it with child wee. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Pretty sure baby wee is not a magical elixir, fancy perfume, latest trendiest household pong... sorry.

Industrial upholstery cleaner, id pay for someone to come do it.

They aren't sewn together... (well I mean bits are but not to the frame) - they are pretty much staple-gunned to the frame. It's quite impressive to see but not when you realise how totally un-clean-able they are.

Hss hire upholstery clean. Not super cheap to rent but a lot less than a new sofa. If you could've taken off the covers i would've seconded the bicarb of the foam layers. Bicarb is a great antibacterial and gets rid of smells like nothing else, but not sure if your fabric will cope. Hss upholstery shampoo is good second.

DFS cover includes bodily fluids (I bought a new sofa yesterday and remember them saying this 😂) so you should be covered.
You pay for the cover so phone them, doesnt matter how long you've had it.

Sleepyquest · 01/07/2023 22:06

Please get a professional out to clean it. Do not attempt to do it yourself with any home remedies lol because you'll make it worse.
A professional will be able to fix it for you 😊 probably looking at about £100

fluffiphlox · 01/07/2023 22:11

You can have new cushion pads made to measure if necessary.

Icannoteven · 01/07/2023 22:11

Is it smell or stain that is the problem?

for smell, steam it. If you don’t have a steam cleaner, put a towel over the area and use the stem setting on an iron repeatedly. Once dry, sprinkle with baking soda, leave for a few hours then hoover.

you can also buy specialist sprays for pet wee - this is what we used when ours were training.

Icannoteven · 01/07/2023 22:12

One of my kids managed to vomit down the side of our sofa 🫤 and let’s not talk about the dining chair starting incident.

MyEyesHurt · 01/07/2023 22:13

It's the fear of the smell!

But - why did I shout so hard?! My poor little boy. He's a real cutie pie.
"DS can you pass me the cup?"
"But of course!"

I turned into gollum. My sssssofa! My precious sssssofa! Mummy goes to work to pay for the ssssofa and BABY DOES NOT WEE ON THE SOFA!

Just as at school, now they must stand for meals.

Nature’s Miracle on Amazon.
It’s for pets but will work “miracles” for little boys.

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 01/07/2023 22:28

There must be a way to get the cover off - how would you ever clean/wash them otherwise. Then the spongy but - shower, bath, get loads of cycles to warm/soapy water through it - or outside in the garden with a hosepipe.

Hill1991 · 01/07/2023 22:30

Get a professional carpet cleaner bloke out they normally charge around £30-£40 for one sofa but i can guarantee that it will be money well spent, I wouldn't mess around with trying to do it yourself as you could ruin the fabric

Hunkydory99 · 01/07/2023 22:31

Daughter did an epic wee ours a few years ago. I put the whole base cushion in the bath and added dettol laundry cleanser then soaked it. Walked up and down this large cushion for hours to get all the wee out then several more once the bath was drained to get all the excess water out. Coincided with very hot weather so had the cushion out on a bench and turned jt every hour. Took 48 hours to dry mind - retained water like you wouldn’t believe. Mercifully it doesn’t smell.

Hill1991 · 01/07/2023 22:32

Oh and for the future put down a puppy pad with a towel on top them puppy pads are very absorbent

vipersnest1 · 01/07/2023 22:39

You need to get it out as soon as possible. As your cushion isn't removable, get some towels, use one folded but large enough to go over the wet patch, then stand on it and tread the cushion all over where the patch is - the purpose it to remove as much liquid as possible. If one towel gets soaked, replace it with another. Once you've got as much out as you can, you could give the surface a gentle wash with a cloth and some detergent - but make sure you remove the liquid as before.
It should be fine.

OneLittleFinger · 01/07/2023 22:41

I've had similar here a couple of times (mist recently she fell asleep on sofa as she was ill, and weed when she woke up).

I throw the cover into the washing machine and the interior into the bath. Used Fairy Liquid and the shower to clean , and stamped on it thoroughly to help. Left in bath for a day then dried by radiator.

ThatSunCreamSmell · 01/07/2023 22:41

This happened to us (similar situation anyway, not quite the same sofa but it was from DFS).. we dragged the whole thing into the garden, covered it in fabric cleaner and I hosed it down 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

If a heatwave is coming could be worth a try as it will dry quick.

ThatFraggle · 01/07/2023 22:46

Paddling pool. Warm soapy water. The whole family stomping on it like grape crushing winemakers.

I genuinely lol'd at this, whilst also deeply sympathetic to the sofa upset.

Eve171 · 01/07/2023 22:54

I'm genuinely sympathetic towards your sofa distress as a mother of a toddler, but also you're so funny😀

I have no useful suggestions other than obviously rehoming your pissy child

Your poor sofa 💔

fyn · 01/07/2023 22:58

Did you take out the DFS sofa insurance, it’s to cover these type of things. We wouldn’t normally but had a potty training toddler when we bought it.

We also have a king sized waterproof mattress cover over the entire bottom pillows with a blanket over the top, it works quite well!

It's a true story. Chair swingers had to stand. I had a boy swing and crack his head so I put my put down, when they didn't, so to speak.

You need one of those carpet cleaner hoover things. I got one after my toddler DS did a runny poo on a new cream bedroom rug. The rug couldn't be saved but it has rescued many other accidents and spillages since.
