Not sure if I'm just worrying unnecessarily.

Husbands been poorly for a few days we thought stomach bug. His pain localised more so he got checked, doc suspected appendicitis so we went to the hospital to check. They also suspected the same. Took bloods and urine and sent home with antibiotics and asked to return first thing for surgery.

He's had his surgery. They were only on for 30mins but found nothing wrong and his appendix isn't inflamed so they've left it.

He's now got to stay in til Monday and wait for a CT scan.

I'm assuming there must be been markers for infection on his blood test results for them to go in with surgery?

Aibu to think they shouldn't have done surgery if they weren't sure?

Is this NHS?
I assume his stomach was tender/painful too the touch?

Elphame · 01/07/2023 15:30

I was taken in the other week for suspected appendicitis. I had to have a CT scan before they decided whether to operate or not.

Toughtips · 01/07/2023 15:33

Yes NHS. His stomach was really painful in that area yeah. He had keyhole surgery this morning and they've found nothing. The surgeon last night said they'd take it out anyway as it can sometimes be infected and not show on the outside but they haven't?

this is not uncommon. when a patient presents like this, we have to weigh up the risks and benefits of surgery v waiting. it sounds like in this case they decided it was prudent to operate. laparoscopic surgery is quite low risk. so I wouldn't worry too much.

Toughtips · 01/07/2023 15:43

Hopefully the CT scan will show what's causing pain then. I'm just worried.

My husband had suspected appendicitis but his bloods showed no sign of infection or inflammation and that he is essentially fine just in a lot of pain.

Was told to take buscopan incase the pain is spasmodic. That was 2 months ago and he is still is agony daily but GP won't do anything just says it's IBS 🙃

I just thought they'd have done a CT scan before operating on him. Just seems like a waste of time.

Sometimes they anticipate they won't have time for a scan and so just prep for theatre immediately. I had my appendectomy without a scan - it would have burst if they'd left it any longer.

Well they're still non the wiser. He's still waiting for a scan. He's got a lot of pain it's taking his breath. What a stressful weekend.
