To be annoyed with Vinted sellers who claim things are ‘heavily discounted’

I offered on a bridal belt that’s being sold for £65, I started by offering low £40, as expected seller decline and counter offered £60, so I offer £50 hoping to get the price down.

the seller than messaged to say no way and that the belt is already ‘heavily discounted’

the belt new is £69.99.. so with buyers protection and postage I would be paying over that amount anyway! The thing is the bridal store doesn’t do online sales and I live at least an hour from any of their stores so now I’m just stressed that I’m probably going to have to bite the bullet and just pay over the price of new 🙃 but I’m right to be miffed about it aren’t I?!

Not really. Add the cost and inconvenience of traveling to the shop and it’s probably about the same.

I don't think yabu, it's secondhand. Too many people these days seem to want to recoup 90% of the cost of things, but buying secondhand you are always running the risk of the item being damaged or not fitting etc. and not being able to return it. I generally think is something is secondhand it should cost between 30-60% of the original price depending on the condition of the item.

Also, I've noticed that so many sellers on vinted don't factor in postage and buyer protection. I've seen used items adding up to more than they would cost brand new ordered online where you'll be able to return for free the majority of the time.

If I’m selling, I’m not interested in getting into a haggling battle. I’d much prefer someone offer what they actually want to pay (in this case £60) rather than a lowball. I would turn it down automatically if it was a lot lower than I wanted.

That said, I do agree that some sellers list for far too much. The postage and buyers protection adds up and doesn’t get factored in by a lot of sellers.

Buy a new one, wear it then sell it on vented but at a lower price just to undercut her.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 01/07/2023 09:32

That is really annoying. I would probably just suck it up and buy it though if I needed it.

I don't bother haggling on vinted when I'm selling - I've set the price I want (usually very cheap) so find it irritating that that's the done thing for buyers.

I do feel on the whole that second hand things need to be at least 50% cheaper though, unless it's some rare item! Some people are totally bonkers with that they think they can sell things at.

PurplePear7 · 01/07/2023 09:39

Buyers protection would be £3.70 so how much is she charging for postage?!

Is it brand new unworn or has it been used?

44PumpLane · 01/07/2023 09:39

Do you know anyone (even through work) that would be willing to pick one up for you and post it.

For that I'd rather pay the price for a new item.

Conkersinautumn · 01/07/2023 09:43

Look elsewhere! Set yourself a % of the original price you're prepared to pay and don't sweat it. Secondhand stuff needn't be more than 30 or40% of the price new.

Curseofthenation · 01/07/2023 10:16

I would travel to the shop and make a day out of it.

prescribingmum · 01/07/2023 10:20

I would also travel to shop to get in brand new and turn down her offer telling her that it is because you can get it for 69.99 from your local shop so makes sense to get it from there.

It is also worth calling the shop and asking if they will post it to you.
