Not to go out because my cat has had kittens?

bloominghecks · 01/07/2023 08:35

My cat has unexpectedly had kittens this morning.
I adopted her a few weeks ago and had no clue
Tonight I'm at a gig with my friend but don't want to leave my cat.
Two of the kittens are passed and the vet has advised I will need to hand feed the kittens if they survive (which they don't think they will)
I'm concerned friend is going to be mad at me
We have tickets for a concert

Sober gig and ask if someone can take over while you go?

Velvian · 01/07/2023 08:37

Understandable that you want to stay with your cat and kittens. Any chance of your friend sacking it off to join you?

If not, give her your ticket to take someone else.

Fingers crossed for the kittens!

thirdfiddle · 01/07/2023 08:37

Of course YANBU. Life happens, your friend will understand, tell her quick so she can offer your ticket to someone else - or do you know a mutual friend who might like it?
Good luck with the kitties!

Hairyfairy01 · 01/07/2023 08:41

So you are having to hand feed the kittens at no doubt very frequent intervals? If you go to the gig they will miss some of their feeds? And even with this hand feeding there is still a high chance one or more kitten will die. Have I got that right?

bloominghecks · 01/07/2023 08:44

Basically what's happened is the vet thinks they are premature as they extremely small.
She shaved my cats tummy to try and help the kittens feed but my cat isn't having any of it.
We have had to put cat and kittens in separate rooms as the vet said as they are premature it's the cats instinct to attack as she thinks they won't survive.
They need feeding every hour but if I went my dad would help
The vet doesn't think they will survive the day due to how premature they are.

Ok, so your dad is around and willing to help if you did go out. Apologies, I thought you were literally suggesting you leave them for the evening. If I was your friend I would understand. Can anybody else go in your place?

GrumpyPanda · 01/07/2023 08:50

Drip feeding OP. If your dad will take over just go to the concert and come back early.

DragonDoor · 01/07/2023 08:53

If your dad can be there and feed the kittens hourly, then go to the concert.

PurplePear7 · 01/07/2023 08:54

If your dad is happy to help then it’s fine to go to the concert.

But it’s also fine to stay at home if you think you wont enjoy your evening!

Why would you think this never happened ? When I was young We had a young cat who had a litter, a couple of her kittens died, it does happen and one of them did need feeding with a syringe

bloominghecks · 01/07/2023 09:04

I know I would just be there but not there if that makes sense
I feel a bit silly for not even realising she was pregnant
Looking back at pics now on my camera roll it was obvious
I stupidly thought you couldn't see it on her tummy just weight on her sides
Il find the pic

The troll hunters are so tedious. They think they're clever, but ignore the fact that troll hunting is just as forbidden as trolling, so even if they're right they're no better.
Wish they'd bore off.

Anyway, OP, if your dad can take over for a bit that would be good... Shame to miss your concent and let your friend down.

bloominghecks · 01/07/2023 09:11

Here's my princess
Didn't have a clue
It's probably obvious isn't it?
Luckily she's fine and walking around like nothings happened
I'm however a nervous wreck

Not to go out because my cat has had kittens?

Just why do you feel the need to be a dick to someone about a perfectly likely situation?
Are you bored?

Maybe it's you that's bored

Growlybear83 · 01/07/2023 10:58

If it was me, I don't think I would be able to enjoy myself if I went out and left the kitties. I really hope at least some of them pull through.

Just give your ticket to your friend and let her find someone else to take. You'll need to keep those kittens warm as well as fed every hour.

Orchidgal · 01/07/2023 11:06

I think that if you’d rather not go to the concert, looking after the kittens is a good enough reason xx

3dogsandarabbit · 01/07/2023 11:09

What I would do OP is get a box, put some warm bedding in there and put your cat in there with the kittens and see how she is with them. You may find that her maternal instincts kick in and she will be fine with them. If not then keep them separated.

goldierocks · 01/07/2023 11:42

Hi @bloominghecks

You got your (unknowingly pregnant) cat recently, is that right? Did you get her from a rescue centre? If so, I'd suggest calling them or your local Cats Protection for advice. They will have dealt with this situation before.

Female cats can get pregnant at a very young age. They are still tiny/little more than kittens themselves, so it's perfectly possible not to notice. Especially if her young age meant she delivered prematurely.

The one reason I think you may not have got her from a rescue centre is they tend to make sure adults are spayed/neutered before rehoming. Please consider booking your cat (she looks lovely in her photo) in to be spayed as soon as she's recovered. She could be back in heat in under a month.

Even if any of the kittens survive, if she's showing zero maternal instinct then I doubt mum cat will tolerate having them around. Involving a rescue centre early is most likely to achieve the best outcome. Hand-feeding newborn kittens at term is incredibly difficult if you"ve never been trained or done it before, I can only imagine how difficult it would be to hand feed premature kittens. Were you left special milk? They would not tolerate cow's or goat's milk at that age.

Good luck Flowers

JMSA · 01/07/2023 11:45

Oh my goodness OP, I don't blame you one bit for wanting to stay home with your cat and kitties.
I must admit, I'm really surprised at this escaped the rescue centre's notice. Usually they're really 'on it' and spay/neuter before the cat leaves. Of course, maybe it wasn't a rescue centre you adopted from.
Anyway, really hope your kittens survive - please keep us posted and best of luck!

bloominghecks · 01/07/2023 14:26

No I bought her from a online advert so not really a "rescue but I feel like I rescued her ha ha
Yes we have special milk now but the vet has said they can come and collect them and they can hand raise them to give them the best chance of survival
I think I'm going to do this as I work full time and don't think I can find anyone who is able to help me out here
My cat is a little shaky but I've been told it could be exhaustion
