couldn't find right section and need advise quick about my son

right long story, but i have nowhere else to vent and ask advise!!

on thursday afternoon we noticed ds had what looked like a small mouth ulcer thing on his tongue. On friday morning he got up and it looked bigger, its almost like a MASSIVE spot on the end of his tongue as it looks like its filled with puss sort of stuff. he was also very drained of energy, burning up (temp of 38.8) and so weak he couldn't get up to go to the toilet, or even know when he needed a wee and ended up wetting himself which he's not done for a while....and he was in tears with embarresment that he'd done it, and ended up spending the rest of the day in pull-ups. by lunchtime his thing on his tongue was even bigger and it had spread onto his lip too. I phoned the GP and the receptionist was an absolute horror and said they were fully booked and take him to the chemits to get over-the counter stuff.

so i dragged him to the chemist (had to put him in his sisters pram as he was so weak) in the cold only for them to say he must be in lots of pain and to take him to the walk-in centre. I phoned dh to let him know, and my sister to tell her i'd be out longer as i'd left her with dd and the puppy....anyway half an hours walk later i got there and the nurse saw him about 5mins after we arrived, she looked at it, said she'd never seen anything like it and was going to get a collegue to look at it, he came in and said the same and then they brought the head nurse there in to look at it....bearing in mind that poor ds had had the chemist and 2 other nurses prodding in his mouth already he was heartbroken and in tears at being seen by yet another person. She said it looked like a mixture of about 4/5 different things and said she'd rather he be seen by a GP for a better diagnosis. she phoned my GP's and they gave me an app for an hour later.

got a bus home with a tired, ill, distraught little boy...dh had come home from work early and we took him to the doctors together. we went in to see the doctor and he looked at declan quick and asked me a few Q's, when i told him his temp was so high earlier he looked at me as if not to believe me, so i said they'd taken it at the walk-in and noted it on the record he could access, and then he said 'yes i see it now' (he'd had some calpol at the walk-in which must have kicked in a bit by then)....then just said what ds had is a viral infection, to keep giving him calpol and he wants to see him on monday to review it.

I dont want to believe its just a viral infection as 3 other nurses surely would have detected something like that, i've never heard of viral infections causing what it has done to ds's tongue and lips, and today he's got up and what he had yesterday has doubled in size again on his lips and spread onto the skin below his lip....

what do i do? ds wont eat because of the pain, he only just drinks, and its so heartbreaking. is it too much to take him to the hospital? obviously the walk-in staff wouldn't know any more than they did yesterday!!

HELP ME!!!

how old is he? Sounds like it could be his first (primary) herpes infection. If usually causes temperature blisters in mouth etc the first time round. Usualy found in the under 5's. Cold sores come later.

Have a google perhaps.

oh god, i don't know
I would probably phone NHS direct and they may arrange an emergency doctor to see him

yurt1 · 23/02/2008 18:46

this is a really severe case (don't look if squaemish)

DS3 had a primary herpes infection that led to a blistered mouth, temp and no eating (sore throat).

glaskham · 23/02/2008 18:46

he's just turned 3.....he's just in tears every 5-10mins from cathing the lump on his tongue when talking etc.

how old is ds?

does it look like impetigo?

if it's impetigo he'd probably need antibiotics

orif it's hand, foot and mouth it's just a virus that needs analgesic

Twiglett · 23/02/2008 18:47

give him ice lollies?

glaskham · 23/02/2008 18:48

on that pic the bottom bit on the skin under the lips looks a bit like what ds has, but the rest doesn't

ds had 'stawberry tongue' when he had scarlet fever could it be that

tearinghairout · 23/02/2008 18:49

The staff at A&E can get hld of a doctor... if you don't knwo what to do I would take him in to A&E. NHS direct are a joke - sorry but they are - I rang for some advice recently, you spend hours on the phone answering irrelevant questions (Have you had any heart attacks in the past two years? Strokes? etc.) before you get to talk to a doctor, then the doctor says you should go & see your GP. Waste of time. Take him to A&E. Best of luck.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 23/02/2008 18:50

yes it looked like that pic an he got impetigo with the scarlet fever - he needs a/bs

glaskham · 23/02/2008 18:51

its not impetigo either, looks nothing like that, the nurse at the walk-in said she thought it may have been that but he's showing no signs on his hands or feet so it isn't that.

DH says he'll come home and see if he thinks i'm over-reacting (as i do tend to panic a little, but he's my baby!!) and we'll decide what to do, be it hospital or getting an emergency GP out.

Here's a bit about primary herpes
"The primary episode of herpetic gingivostomatitis is characterized by constitutional symptoms such as malaise, fever and regional lymphadenopathy. Acute ulcerative gingivostomatitis occurs as a result of virus replication in the affected tissues. Vesicular eruptions may occur throughout the mouth. The gingivae are red and swollen and bleed readily. They may have a mottled appearance in the maxillary areas. Touching them or attempting to consume food causes severe pain."

Ie blisters in the mouth plus fever! ds3 wouldn't eat at all with his,

glaskham · 23/02/2008 18:53

should i take a pic of it and put a link to my picture trail, if its the strawberry tongue thing then at least i'd know.

glaskham · 23/02/2008 18:55

cant get a good enough pic to do that.....will search it myself and see if there are any pics online!!

check hand foot and mouth picies as well. DS1's mouth was pretty blistered with that plus temp etc.
