To not have to pay for this upfront

I've got builders in at the minute doing some renovation work. I popped out this morning and when I returned they had manage to smash one of the large double glazed sliding door glass in the dining room. It is still in one piece but the whole piece is shattered and ready to go everywhere at any point.

The builder has said that they will pay for it but I must get it done and then invoice them. I don't have the money to pay for it upfront as after a quick Google it is going to cost around 1k.

Surely they should be paying for this upfront?!

Is it not insured on your building's insurance?

rubyslippers · 30/06/2023 12:17

Try your insurance or theirs?

CuriouslyDifferent · 30/06/2023 12:19

Ask for their insurers details - for your insurance company, as you can’t afford to replace it yourself.

They may choose to do it off insurance, but that means their money upfront.

It sounds like they might be cowboys who don't have insurance if they didn't immediately suggest that their insurance company would be in touch about it. It's unreasonable for them to expect you to come up with the money for it and wait to see if they will repay. That's not the norm.

What an absolute nightmare! No I wouldn’t be paying upfront either, do they have insurance? Or would your home insurance cover it?

Filament · 30/06/2023 12:33

The OP shouldn't have to claim on her own insurance. It's likely to affect her premium next year.

Tinkerbyebye · 30/06/2023 12:33

Why would you pay upfront? You get a glass installer to come and fit and invoice the builders direct if they dont want to go through insurance

BellaJuno · 30/06/2023 12:33

I wouldn’t be paying upfront - they need to fix it themselves or claim on their insurance.

Have you informed your insurers about the renovation work as it might invalidate your insurance if you haven’t, not that I’d suggest you claim on it’s it’ll impact on your future premiums.

Kingsparkle · 30/06/2023 12:35

No do not pay upfront. Same thing happened to me with a sash window and they apologised and sorted it out themselves

Betterlatethanontime · 30/06/2023 12:35

Get a quote from somebody, send the quote to the builder and get them to pay it before you get it fixed.

DogInATent · 30/06/2023 12:37

Have you paid for the renovation work up-front?

You could offer them a choice:

  • they get it fixed and nothing more is said; or
  • you get it fixed, and you withhold the full cost of the repair including labour and VAT plus a 20% project management fee from the balance outstanding on the work they're doing.
