Do you need to worry about a sudden sore throat?

I was sat watching telly last night, absolutely no symptoms of anything, felt fine all day and I could literally sense my throat starting to feel tingly/sorer by the minute. Within an hour it was so sore I needed painkillers and barely slept last night as it hurts to swallow. This morning the same.

I read somewhere online that a very sudden sore throat can be a sign of strep so now I'm worrying 🫣

Normally I'd just leave it but what do we think? It is very sore to swallow still but I can do it. Needing regular painkillers though.

I'm worrying more so as I have a 1 year old at home so if it was strep I'd be terrified of giving it to him.

I know you shouldn't Google!!

I think with all the air changes at the mo it's perfectly possibly it's just that.
If you get any other symptoms then see the gp but in all honestly it's probably that you are just a bit run down so try not to worry for now

Is your child immunocompromised or are you misunderstanding the severity of tonsillitis? It’s not nice but a fairly common illness.

Millions of people, including children, get a sore throat every day, and survive the experience. Are you normally prone to health anxiety?

wyrm0 · 30/06/2023 18:56

I don't think it's that sudden if it happened over an hour

This is a very strong/strange reaction to a sore throat. Probably just the start of a cold.

CaroleSinger · 30/06/2023 19:02

That's how my COVID started.

EmmaPaella · 30/06/2023 19:03

No, not usually!

orangeflags · 30/06/2023 19:05

My covid was exactly like this. No symptoms to super sore throat

Seeline · 30/06/2023 19:12

I always start a cold in that way.
