AIBU to want to sleep?

Just that? AIBU to want to have a good night sleep?

I go to bed exhausted, as soon as my head touches the pillow I'm wide awake.

I read hoping that will make me sleep, I try to avoid my phone as I know that doesn't work. I play silly alphabet games in my head...pick a topic and list 3 things starting with a, b etc . That used to work but it doesn't seem to any more

Honestly, I am so tired I could cry.

I'm up at 6 for work and I'm lucky if I get 3 hours a night. I don't know what to do any more

I don't have issues falling to sleep but I wake up between 3 and 4 daily and can't get back to sleep and it's killing me.

I've had insomnia for 20 years but it used to be the couldn't get to sleep kind and now for the last year it's this.

I've tried everything-Magnesuim, diet, sleep hygiene, exercise (but not to late in the evening), American sleeping tablets. Nothing bloody touches it. I'm exhausted :(

Sympathy, lastminutewednesday. I have months on end when I can't get off to sleep, then it 'flips' and no matter what time I fall asleep, I wake up at the same time in the early morning (most often around 3.20 for some reason) and that's it for the night. That usually lasts a few weeks then it flips back.

How are we all doing tonight?

Me ! Was just about to start a thread when I saw your post. I've had about 4 hours sleep and am now wide awake!

I've had insomnia off and on for years but stress and anxiety is currently keeping me awake. I've tried lots of things so going to beg the doctor for some sleeping pills on Monday to hopefully reset!

It's so grim isn't it

I'm trying not to go down the meds route because I don't want to have to rely on them, but it's getting harder and harder.

I've not had a minutes sleep yet tonight and I've been in bed since 11. I'm due to get up in 3 1/2 hours!

Fingers crossed you manage to drop off soon 🤞

Thanks. I've got a serious operation in 10 days so I know my current insomnia is down to that. I can usually sleep though till morning but it usually takes me a few hours to get to sleep.

baggiesmalls · 01/07/2023 03:27

Illl join

I went to sleep at 11 but woke up at 2.30 am and I've tossed and turned and thrown covers on and off and I'm awake .

Might get a cuppa and try and get back off .

I've been listening to the podcast "Nothing Much Happens: stories for sleep and relaxation" on Apple Podcasts to help me fall asleep/get back to sleep.

It is a yoga/meditation instructor who basically tells a bedtime story where.. nothing much happens. She tells the same story twice, the second time much slower. I was really sceptical but I've been asleep by the end of every episode I've listened to so far.

nokidshere · 01/07/2023 06:04

Morning, hope you all fell asleep at some point.

I've had insomnia since I was 15, now 62! I've tried pretty much everything on and off over the years with little success beyond a few weeks.

The thing that works most now is breathing. I go to bed before midnight, make sure I'm comfortable, cool room etc. Then take a deep breath in, hold it for 7, breathe out for 5. Repeat until you are asleep or super relaxed. It works about 80% of the time and I at least fall asleep for a few hours even if I can't stay asleep all night. Last night I went to bed at 11, fell asleep quickly with the breathing, woke at 3, tossed/turned for a bit then dozed off again and woke up at 5.

On nights I really can't get to sleep I just get up and do something, often baking or mopping the floors before trying again.

Squeakydogtoy · 01/07/2023 23:12

Right, I have come to bed. I'm relaxed and going to try the deep breathing method.

Wish me luck 🙏

@Squeakydogtoy did you get some sleep?

I did!! Slept from around 12.00-9...9 hours sleep! Fingers crossed the same for tonight (although up at 6, but I'll take it 😃)

Have you tried white noise / rain sounds / etc?

jeaux90 · 02/07/2023 15:41

HRT, was sleeping like a baby within a few days after a year of trying to go "natural" and almost having a nervous breakdown due to no sleep and brain fuzz.

Also new research is showing that women who are on HRT are 50% less likely to suffer from Alzheimer's later in life.

catwithflowers · 02/07/2023 15:51

Promethazine can be bought over the counter at Boots and helps with insomnia. The brand name is Phenergan. It's non addictive, it really helps me to stay asleep, but does make me a little groggy for the first couple of hours the following day.

Nannyfannybanny · 02/07/2023 20:36

There was an article in the paper a couple of days ago if saying 5 years on HRT increased your risk of dementia.

MavisMcMinty · 02/07/2023 20:48

I was certainly wary of HRT because back then it was supposed to increase the risk of breast cancer and Alzheimer’s, and my Mum who’d taken HRT for a while was diagnosed with both. However, if my menopausal symptoms had been terrible enough, I’d’ve taken the risk.
