So if you end up at a self service checkout and realise the previous customer has paid for something but left it behind.

Do you:

Think it's your lucky day and pocket it?

Say nothing & leave it there?

Hand it In to staff?

Err hand it in ya thief

sandrene · 29/06/2023 22:55

Hand to staff

BooksAndHooks · 29/06/2023 22:55

Hand it to staff. Especially as there is CCTV.

LaMaG · 29/06/2023 22:56

Do not keep it. Hand it back, the customer may return and if not who knows, probably goes back into stock.

You really should not need to ask this question

HoHoHoMo · 29/06/2023 22:56

I’d either just move it to the side and leave it there, or give it to a member of staff. I’m not a tea leaf.

Haleso · 29/06/2023 22:57

Obviously hand it to staff…… it’s not yours to take?

sureigot20 · 29/06/2023 22:57

I would hand it in! Why would you take it?

Hoppinggreen · 29/06/2023 22:57

Hand to staff

MichelleScarn · 29/06/2023 22:59

How do you know its paid for and not dumped?

Element4056 · 29/06/2023 23:01

I have done this as a mother of two under 2. I have left items behind wrangling a toddler and a baby, only to leave and realise I've forgotten my items! I was very grateful to find that my paid for items were kept safe by staff.

LadyGAgain · 29/06/2023 23:02

Hand it in. Always.

TheSnowyOwl · 29/06/2023 23:03

Hand it to staff. Wouldn’t occur to me not to.

AliTheMinx · 29/06/2023 23:04

Absolutely hand it in...

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 29/06/2023 23:04

I was the idiot who left my bottle of gin at the till and forgot to take it with me. Took the bag of shopping but didn't put the gin in the bag.

Returned 15 minutes later & asked if it was handed in. They checked the cameras & the very next customer took a quick look around her and just took it with her.

I've accidentally took eyeliner that was in the bagging area before (thought teen dd had scanned it she thought it was mine and I had scanned it 😳) but I would never deliberately take something someone stole my cat litter once

StopMindlesslyScrolling · 29/06/2023 23:10

Just out of curiosity OP, did the supermarket give you another bottle or did you have to pay for another?

That's so bad form. Nasty bitch.

Her obviously.... not you!!

KimberleyClark · 29/06/2023 23:11

I'd hand it in.

Thursa · 29/06/2023 23:13

Hand it in.

LoveBluey · 29/06/2023 23:16

I'd probably think it had just been left and not paid for so likely just ignore it.
However if I knew it had been paid for by someone else I'd be much more likely to try and make sure it got back to them.
Morally (and I realise this is questionable) I'd rather steal a bottle of gin from a supermarket than an individual.

LBF2020 · 29/06/2023 23:20

@ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees no way! Was the shop able to offer you a replacement?
Someone left their change (£s) at the self checkout this week. I was also paying cash so could have easily taken it. I handed it in to staff but they didn't seem that bothered to be honest. Perhaps it happens all the time.

pizzaHeart · 29/06/2023 23:27

Hand it in.
I also did it with cash and they just put it straight in a charity box. They’ve said it’s the rule - they don’t return forgotten cash.
Hope karma will meet this next customer very soon.

Bottles of spirits usually have security tags on them don't they, so it would have been obvious it had been paid for if there was no tag.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 29/06/2023 23:28

@StopMindlesslyScrolling - I had to pay for it which is fair enough because the supermarket shouldn't be out of pocket for my mistake. I don't have an issue with that at all but it's a very expensive bottle when you have to pay for it twice!

@LaMaG lol...I knew you meant her.

It was obvious it was paid for...security tag had been removed.

The security guard was kind of amused. He recognised her. She works locally and is there a few times a week. I wish I asked him if he will/can say anything to her because she effectively stole from me rather than them. It isn't about getting it back but I would love for her to be embarrassed if he mentioned it.
