Tell me how often you cook ??

I am really struggling with how often to cook to feed my family ! We are 4 people, 1 year old, 3 year old and two adults.

1 year old eats everything. I eat everything but try to keep it healthy/ low calorie. 3 year old is fussy and husband is fussy.

I'm cooking twice a day at the moment and it's really frustrating.

I need to work on a better routine. I work from home, just often cook in my breaks and it's annoying.

The evening meal will usually be two things at least. I don't want to cook twice a day. Or is this what everyone does ?

I think cooking once a day should be enough. The kids eat lunch at nursery etc. husband doesn't want to eat what I give my kids or what I eat. So it's still two meals. I'm tired.

Once a week (sorry kids)

Mum2jenny · 28/06/2023 16:22

Let your husband cook his own dinner if he doesn’t want to eat what you are cooking

This.

Bonkers. No, it's not what everyone does. You don't need to cater for a fussy husband, if he doesn't like what you've made, he can cook himself something else.

Crikeyalmightey · 28/06/2023 16:24

Look at batch cooking and freezing in portions. It saves time and money.

thing47 · 28/06/2023 16:25

Sorry, cross posts or I would have just said 'This' too ☝

It's also my three year old though. It's really hit and miss if she'll eat or not.

Cook one evening meal, those that don’t want it go without or cook their own, that’s always been my rule! Oh and my kids weren’t allowed to dictate what we all ate. I accept they may not like one or two things but no way am I restricting what the whole family eats. And as for cooking separate meals - sod that!

NooNaNa · 28/06/2023 16:26

I cook six days out of seven. We are a big family and I have a lot of preferences to consider. Some days people are faced with a meal that they wouldn't normally choose. They can like it or lump it.

Bumdealoftheweek · 28/06/2023 16:27

I cook one meal. If they don't like it, tough. I used to be more flexible but there are 6 of us and I work FT and cook everything from scratch. I also got fed up of never having the food I enjoyed so now I compromise a bit. Generally a meal will always contain something they eat even if it is just some plain pasta.

CurlewKate · 28/06/2023 16:28

Cook a meal that accommodates as many people as possible. Serve it. Done.

At 3 I would have been expecting my DCs to try anything once. If they didn't like it, that's fine, there was always, bread, fruit and cereal in the house. Making an entirely different meal? Not a chance I would do that. That's how they grow up to be fussy eaters in adulthood…

My three year old 🤦‍♀️ it depends on her mood. Often she won't even try it. But will eat two plates of the same thing the next time I make it. Her diet is so bad. I worry for her. I try not to give any reaction, but really wish she ate better.

I cook pretty much every meal every day (might occasionally have an oven pizza). But I'd never do different dishes for difficult people - if you don't want to eat what I've cooked then DIY.

WafflingDreamer · 28/06/2023 16:30

I cook lunch and dinner on the days that I'm home. Lunch is normally something simple like an omelette or pasta. I don't always 'cook' dinner I suppose, we sometimes have pizza or oven chips so I just bung it in the oven.

This is normal though. I tend to do one family meal for all, and include something I am (mostly!) sure my kids will eat. If they really won’t touch it then they can have toast and fruit.

DrSbaitso · 28/06/2023 16:30

The three year old has an excuse to be fussy. Husband needs to get over himself or cook his own dinner.

Mumtothreegirlies · 28/06/2023 16:33

I cook everyday although occasionally I’ll cave and get a kfc or a Chinese.
a typical week of food will be
fajitas
chilli con carni
bolognaise
chicken thighs jacket potato and salad
sausages and wedges
roast dinner
chicken kievs and mash

it’s exhausting trying to keep everyone happy
I tend to keep a few frozen meals in the freezer incase anyone decides to be extra fussy.

Peony654 · 28/06/2023 16:34

That’s mad. Cook one meal a day for everyone. There’s no reason kids need different food.

I feel so strongly that kids should just eat what we eat.

My three year old !! She's a nightmare!!

But-if your kids have a cooked lunch at nursery, they could just have a sandwich in the evening. And then cook for you and DH

Dinoswearunderpants · 28/06/2023 16:36

1-2 times a week. Hubby does most of the cooking and when I say I cook, I pretty much chuck something in the air fryer or slow cooker.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 28/06/2023 16:36

I would cook one meal for everyone - if your DH doesn't like it, he's free to make himself something different.

As for the 3yo - I would give them a few things you know they'll eat (doesn't need to be cooked food) and then just have other bits available for her to try if she wants to. No way would I be cooking two meals every night.

Happyinheels · 28/06/2023 16:37

Too bloody often!

mondaytosunday · 28/06/2023 16:39

One meal max a day (and tonight we are having sushi and food i can microwave).
I do fry an egg for breakfast but don't count that as cooking.
For lunch it's something cold that i more assemble than cook.
I don't like cooking. My (deceased) husband love to - no time during the week but he did every weekend.
