Asking about salary

I was just in an employment services office. She pointed out a job in my area that was advertised. But she didn't know what the salary was for the job.

I've seen other similiar jobs in my small town, in this area, that all have the salary advertised.

Anyway I thought I would apply to this job as well. I rang up to ask what the salary was for the job.

She was really rude, and she said "oh no I couldn't tell you that". And she made me feel like I was rude for even asking.

Like. What is going on there . Why advertise a job without a salary? And shouldn't we able to ring and ask

Yea that’s weird. Even if they don’t want to give specific surely they know a range. I’m assuming it’s not a rare, very highly paid role where I could vary a huge amount

I would expect an 'ordinary' job at anything for National Living Wage to several multiples of that to be advertised with a wage/salary range. Maybe it might more for an exceptional candidate and or prospect of negotiation in some aspects.

I'd be reluctant to apply for a job without being aware of what ball park the pay was in. If I rang, making clear I was interested and was told to eff off in this fashion I'd think it's not a place with a culture I'd fine suited me.

It suggests they’d be happy to try and lowball candidates - not a great company culture
