To spare I thought for Northern Irish Mumsnetters

To English , Welsh and some Scottish mums please keep it in your thoughts that us in NI with school age children have our schools breaking up this week if they haven't already and shall not return until end of Aug/early September. That is 9+ weeks and it's pissing down. To be honest by week 7 they are basically feral 😂
I am of course joking (I think) but in a few weeks time when your posting about the 6 weeks please think of us poor sods already 3 weeks in .

Thank god for holiday clubs Grin

begonebegone · 27/06/2023 14:20

I really hear you OP.

begonebegone · 27/06/2023 14:20

Holiday clubs that often start at 10! and end at 1!

AfingeroffudgeisNOTenough · 27/06/2023 14:22

Ha! I‘m in NI and I flippin’ love it! Lived in Scotland for many years and never felt like 6 weeks was enough. Roll on Friday!

begonebegone · 27/06/2023 14:22

The endless rain though, I wish we could give some to the south east of england!

Ours is 07:30-18:00 thankfully. (After school club/nursery holiday provision.)

The rain is awful though. I've just booked a bouncy castle for a birthday party in a couple of weeks, would you all mind terribly crossing your fingers?

Wendysfriend · 27/06/2023 14:30

Our secondary schools finished 3 weeks ago (Dublin). Primary's this Friday.

gabsdot · 27/06/2023 14:30

It's the same in the Republic and it's even worse for Secondary school. They finished on 2 June. They get 13 weeks off.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 27/06/2023 14:40

Think of us poor Irish mumsnetters down the other end of the country who have already had ours off for a solid month and do not send them back till sept. 3 bloody MONTHS of holidays in secondary school down here.

Sissynova · 27/06/2023 14:43

I do find it funny when I see English mumsnetters moaning about the summer holidays and when it’s only 6 weeks.

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 27/06/2023 14:44

Also think of the NI mothers of children with SEN whose children still have no place in a school for September.

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMeAgain · 27/06/2023 14:49

Just over seven weeks here not so Sunny Scotland begin on Friday. DD was one of 8 in her class this morning, I assume plenty are making the most of cheaper holidays.

Allmarbleslost · 27/06/2023 14:52

I work term time only in a school in England and now I'm thinking I should move to NI. My kids can stay here though.

My boy finished 31 May, back from Irish college a few days and we are all fit to kill each other.

Youngest 2 in primary off since last Fri. It's going to be a long summer

Neverinamonthofsundays · 27/06/2023 14:54

31st May here too. 3 teens all wandering around with faces like smacked arses.

LakeTiticaca · 27/06/2023 14:56

Why such long holidays?
6 weeks was more than enough when my kids were school age. I was tearing my hair out one day one 🤬🤬

❤️❤️ Hope you get sorted soon. There really isn’t enough provision

TheoTheopolis23 · 27/06/2023 15:03

It's been hot and sunny for like 3 weeks.

This is typical of the instant amnesia for good weather people seem to have in NI.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 27/06/2023 15:04

Really?!

What man thought that was a good idea?

CoralBells · 27/06/2023 15:05

I will spare a thought, although mine are 16 and 18, so make their own entertainment. They are going on a 3 night city break to Belfast in August and really looking forward to it.

😂😂😂 love how you’re leaving the kids behind to the shorter holiday lol.

I have one already off, one finishing Thursday though trying every day to get off early, and one Friday- who’s off today with questionable tummy ache. No family support, no holiday clubs. Just me and them. And their dad in evenings/when he’s off but that’s worse. Send alcohol🍹

Mrsstone · 27/06/2023 15:07

I'm in ROI. My 4yo finished on the 16th June.
My 9yo finished on 23rd.
How do you get to week 7 before they become feral? 😂😂 mine aren't far off it already.

elp30 · 27/06/2023 15:12

My children are now adults (31, 25, 22) but I have three grandchildren ages 11 and seven-year-old twins who have and will be coming to stay with me throughout the summer and I will spare a thought for you.

However, I live in Texas where school lets out for the summer vacation in late May and they don't return for TWELVE LONG WEEKS! To me, nine weeks is a doddle and the six-weeks in England is hardly a summer holiday to me.

I hope these weeks pass easily for you.

fireflyloo · 27/06/2023 15:13

Dc finish tomorrow. Can't wait as I work term time. Weather has typically taken a turn for the worst but hopefully it picks up again.

F1ymetothetoon · 27/06/2023 15:33

Wow I had no idea that the summer holidays were so long in Ireland - but does that mean you have fewer holidays the rest of the year?
