Sports day in the rain

Anyone else doing sports day in the rain today? We've been told to take an umbrella and coat because of the heavy rain forecast. I'm not bothered by rain and happily walk in it regularly but it seems a bit much to expect the whole school to take part in the pouring rain. It's usually an hour and a half event.
Is it character building or daft for it to still go ahead?

Better that than blistering 30 degree heat imo but rain doesn't bother me in the way it bothers some people.

They cancelled DDs sports day last week because of the rain yet when it came to the time parents were meant to be going the sun was splitting the trees!

We've had some very hot sports days too and yes they are worse. The field will be very muddy and they'll be slipping all over the place. New HT is a lot of a dick though so this doesn't really surprise me.

Doubt it'll get too muddy, were desperate for some rain as everything is dry.

Doubt it will get that muddy..

Dontknowwhattopick · 27/06/2023 12:23

My ds’s was cancelled twice last week due to the heat so they have said it is going forward today regardless. Luckily it’s only drizzling here and even better for me, ds hates it if I go watch so I’m at home eating a fish finger sandwich 😁

BugsyDrakeTableScape · 27/06/2023 12:25

Ours was cancelled last week due to heavy rain and thunder storms. Went ahead this morning in light drizzle - although school did text this morning to say if the weather got worse it would be cancelled

Hbh17 · 27/06/2023 12:25

It's character building! Just crack on, let the kids get filthy and have fun.

AutisticLegoLover · 27/06/2023 12:28

Ds hates it usually but maybe this will make it more fun. Great for his asthma running in the damp tooHmm

Well the school can't win with you can they??

brunettemic · 27/06/2023 12:35

Ours is cancelled, I’m gutted as it’s the last one for DS. It’s usually such a fun afternoon and the school so it really well but still make it competitive. Always loads of happy and smiling kids plus it’s nice to see them all supporting each other.

veryfluffyfluff · 27/06/2023 12:36

Depends how wet but I don't see why they shouldnt run in a bit of rain

DrCoconut · 27/06/2023 12:48

Sports day in the rain is worse than normal sports day. It should definitely be cancelled if it's more than a shower. I'm hoping we don't get much more rain, it's been every day for the last few days and forecast into next week. There's standing water in the saucers of my outside plants. It's a pity if the end of year events and summer holidays get rained off after a nice week or two in term time.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 27/06/2023 12:53

It's character building. Jeez.

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 27/06/2023 13:00

I remember years ago going to dd sports day. It was freezing!! I had my winter coat on with hood up. My twins were in the pushchair with cosy toes and winter coats on, rain cover.

I stood there shivering with my umbrella for what felt like a full day.

The poor kids taking part were definitely not enjoying any of it.

Wind, rain, low temperatures is not character building when you are stood outside in shorts and teashirt, it’s cruel!!!

arethereanyleftatall · 27/06/2023 13:03

I guess they couldn't be arsed with the pita parents who will complain that they took a day off from work for sports day and now it's changed and this is all. The. Schools. Fault.

Blueskysunflower · 27/06/2023 13:06

Torrential unremitting rain or actual lightning I’d expect them to cancel it. A few showers/drizzle/light rain I see no reason they can’t carry on. It’s an hour or two and nothing bad is going to happen if children get a bit wet or even muddy, so long as the grass isn’t too slippery (and if it is just don’t do the running part - I’m assuming this is a primary school with multiple activities).

Maglin · 27/06/2023 13:13

They should definitely cancel in case any of the kids or parents melt.

InTheGardenShed · 27/06/2023 13:22

Yes, they may all start to dissolve in this awful awful rain we MAY or may not get!

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 27/06/2023 13:26

I kind of agree with you.

It's not really the same as doing an hour of PE and then going inside to dry, or going for a walk knowing you'll be back home in dry clothes soon.

Sports days generally involve a lot of sitting and waiting which is really grim in the cold and damp - I wouldn't do it as an adult so I wouldn't expect a child to want to do it either!
