DH brushing 3yo teeth with adult paste

Aintthatthetooth · 27/06/2023 08:23

Just that really, turns out that DH has been putting adult Toothpaste on DS 3 toothbrush for over a month now. We have milk teeth Toothpaste in the house which he has been using for the 1 year old, but apparently everytime he's done morning or night teeth brushing over the last month or so he has been using adult Toothpaste on DS3. He said he thought he'd outgrown the baby one. To be clear, he still has all milk teeth, he's 3!
AIBU to think DH is a bit batshit for doing this and needs to stop immediately!?

It's fine - just check the ingredients. They tend to be very very similar it's more about it having a mild taste. Most dentists just say use a small amount of adult toothpaste.

Dillydollydingdong · 27/06/2023 08:25

I can't see the problem. Children's toothpaste is made because children like the taste but if your DS doesn't mind the minty adult flavour, where's the problem?

IglesiasPiggl · 27/06/2023 08:26

Was your DH not aware that there are levels in between baby toothpaste and adult? It's not ideal but not life threatening either. Get a toddler toothpaste. Make sure he knows which one to use from now on.

Stickmansmum · 27/06/2023 08:26

I use adult stuff for all my kids. It is a bit different and I’m not sure recommended for little ones but my dentist told me to use it for one kid with very soft teeth so I just use it for all.

BendingSpoons · 27/06/2023 08:27

It will have a higher amount of fluoride, but if you use less then it's fine.

Aintthatthetooth · 27/06/2023 08:27

It says on the tube 12 years and up, I thought milk teeth Toothpaste didn't have as harsh stuff in it as adult Toothpaste? Am I mistaken?

It isn't adult toothpaste, it's just toothpaste. I haven't seen any toothpaste specifically made for adults. Your DC will be fine.

cooshin · 27/06/2023 08:28

Ignore me, I didn't realise it had an age rating on it!!

wildfirewonder · 27/06/2023 08:28

I thought all toothpaste was basically the same, you use less for kids so they get less flouride. The main difference is taste.

fullfatsocks · 27/06/2023 08:28

My baby is almost 6 months and I was advised by the HV at 6 weeks to just use normal toothpaste when the time comes just a smaller amount. Something to do with fluoride.

MRex · 27/06/2023 08:28

As long as the total amount is small it's great, there's just a lower fluoride content for baby toothpaste. Having recently struggled to move DS onto a proper mint toothpaste, I'd be grateful! Switch to an older child mint one while it's tolerated!

LysHastighed · 27/06/2023 08:28

Too much fluoride can mottle teeth so I’d look into that before continuing to use it

HerVagestyTheQueef · 27/06/2023 08:28

I'm 55. There was no such thing as baby/child toothpaste when I was a child.
We used ordinary toothpaste, and lived to tell the tale.

alloutofluck · 27/06/2023 08:29

I used adult toothpaste on all my kids. Is this not okay?

Aintthatthetooth · 27/06/2023 08:29

Oh I'm sure he will be fine, just made me face palm slightly as there is perfectly good milk teeth Toothpaste in the bathroom cupboard, why choose the adult one instead of that?

Quartz2208 · 27/06/2023 08:30

The only difference other than taste is fluoride. Too much can cause fluorosis/mottled teeth but just switch back to baby toothpaste

Twattle · 27/06/2023 08:30

Omg
Adult toothpaste is fine fgs

Aintthatthetooth · 27/06/2023 08:30

I have mottled teeth myself so would hate for his to end up the same way if it can be helped

dementedpixie · 27/06/2023 08:31

Is it a whitening toothpaste? That could be why it has an age rating. You can use adult toothpaste but not whitening as it can scrub the enamel of softer baby teeth.

ArcticSkewer · 27/06/2023 08:31

Yeah, that's normal.
It's advised in my local area as it's better

Lidlpopdrinker · 27/06/2023 08:31

It’s fine. All that 12 years and up stuff is BS to make people buy different types of toothpaste for their kids. Nothing bad is going to happen, don’t worry.

This. Fluorosis! Use the baby toothpaste.

avoid antibiotics for him in that case

FlounderingFruitcake · 27/06/2023 08:32

The age 3-5 colgate kids we have contains the same amount if fluoride as the adult oral b one we use. Only the ones for under 2s contain less as that age are more likely to swallow it. The kids ones are just made to taste more palatable with fruity flavours but of your DD is ok with the mintyness then that’s great, one less thing to buy!

Littlemissprosecco · 27/06/2023 08:34

As long as he’s using a tiny amount and you little one isn’t swallowing lots it’s fine. It’s to do with the high fluoride in the adult paste. If it’s swallowed it can cause fluorosis of the adult teeth, a brown mottling appearance
