Please help colic and reflux baby

Hi everyone

First turn time Mum to 5 week old, past couple weeks she's been screaming and thrashing about, knees up to chest, sick after every feed, wriggling about constantly.

Dr prescribed infant gaviscon which worked a treat for a week, now feel like I'm back to square one except add constipation from the gaviscon into the mix.

I've tried the comic relief drops, I've tried infacol, I've tried 1oz of cool boiled water with some gripe water mixed in.

I've tried walking her in pram for fresh air, put her in the sling, I've tried a dummy, tummy massage, I sit on the floor for a good hour rubbing her tummy and on the advice of the dr rubbing her bottom gently with a Vaseline covered cotton bud to make her poo. I rock her, bounce her, keep her upright for 30 mins after a feed,

It's relentless and I just want to take this pain from her.

Do I change formula? My GP said buying the anti colic and reflux one is a rip off as they can prescribe thickeners for the bottles, shall I call GP again tomorrow? Her bum hole looks so sore from constipation, I'm cleaning her with warm water and cotton wool (dabbing not wiping) and using sudocrem.

I just at a loss and so exhausted. Is it worth a trip back to drs or is this a phase they'll come to an end at some point?

My DS had awful colic when he was little, these things worked for me at the time and might be worth a go.

Infacol, you've said that you've tried this

It sounds mad but I used to sit him on my head high up and then sorta quickly bring him back down again to my lap, it got a load of wind out and I'm not entirely sure how, maybe the (rapid for a baby, SAFE) bringing back down helped?

Orthodontic teats and dummies, they're flat on the bottom and stop baby sucking in as much air when in use.

I don't know if you'll try these things but they're worth a go. Things WILL get easier in time though. Good luck xx

I don't have much advice OP other than maybe try A&E as a last resort, I don't believe there's a cure for either. My son had colic in the evenings and it was horrible and scary. But it doesn't last forever. Make sure you are getting support so you can take a mental break. When i had severe reflux as a baby my mum took me to A&e out of desperation and I think they helped somewhat, not sure how.

Take care of yourself Flowers

My dd was the same

I used the yellow metanium cream? (Think it's called that - it's yellow and purple tube)

I found that laying her over my arm like a sloth on a branch helped after a feed and swaying while gently patting - I now realise how bad this sounds - I'm sure there's a specific name for the type of hold I mean

Also did alot of bicycle legs to get things going ...

She also loved the mamaroo that swung and I propped her up using a blanket so she wasn't lying flat in it.

I also used aldi mamia milk with mam bottles which I found was better than other milks / bottles.
I was also told the same about the specific colic milks etc so didn't bother

She got diagnosed at 11 weeks (as they refused to listen to me as was during covid) she got a lot better by 6 months as I started weaning

Thanks everyone!

We went back to see GP today, they think that she has a cows milk allergy or needs thicker milk and omeprazole so trying omeprazole and thick milk for 2 weeks and if no different will be moved to dairy free.

You are doing all the right things. Sorry they aren't helping.

DS had this. I found winding him by propping him on my lap into sitting position instead of against my chest helped him not throw up so much.

Keeping them as upright as possible helps, so I put him down for naps in his car seat/rocker or propped his mattress up.

Nothing totally works but all the thngs you describe might help a bit. DS had it severely and it lasted until he was old enough to switch from Gaviscon to ranitidine which has now been discontinued so heaven knows what they offer these days. Do keeping checking in with GP. Is she gaining weight?

Eventually they outgrow it but it is so difficult until they do.

Truthfully I’d investigate CPMA rather than just have omeprazole as reflux is a symptom of something rather than a problem in itself if that makes sense. Hopefully you will get her sorted soon.
