Is this normal for a bite mark?

Posting here for traffic.
My six year old son was bitten by something yesterday, I think it was a mosquito. He's got a few small ones one on his arm, his shoulder, 3 on his legs.
One is quite a lot bigger and more swollen than the others, he says it's sore. I have been putting some anti septic cream on and he's had a cold compress at various times today.
Is it normal for it to swell and be sore?

This looks exactly like a bite I've got now. I've been using anthisan and went down overnight, still there but definitely on the way out I think.
You do need something antihistaminy I'd have thoughts rather than antiseptic to relieve it.

I've had dodgy bites before and went to thepharmacy who gave me some over the counter stuff. I wouldn't be worried now but if you're still concerned tomorrow go to a pharmacy.

Google skeeter syndrome. Very common for children to have a severe allergic response to mild bites. Give him oral antihistamines and keep him covered up when outside. Most kids grow out of it when their immune system matures.

I don't know if it's normal. But they look the same as the mosquito bites my daughter gets. They are very sore indeed. And grow soooo big. I presume she's must have some sort of allergy. Looks horrific on those tiny limbs. Please let me know if you find something to help the itching. We can't. Drives her crazy

Hey, thank you, looking this up now!

Never thought of antihistamine I have some piriton in the fridge so I'll give him some of that and next time I'll spray him with some repellent.
It's the first time he's had it so I was just worried about the swelling

Looks like the type of reaction to bites I get. When overseas, I carry a tube of steroid cream and dab on a tiny amount immediately after being bitten - if I don’t feel the bite, I dab some on when it starts to itch but it’s not as effective. Not saying you should be slathering steroid cream on a child’s leg though but a tiny dab now and then wouldn’t harm.

britnay · 25/06/2023 20:39

@DancingIsHealing You shouldn't store piriton in the fridge

Whydotodaywhatyoucandotomorrow · 25/06/2023 20:42

Piriton at bedtime and making sure they don't get too warm in the night seems to help. I still get bitten like mad and have that reaction and last summer used calamine lotion for the first time in years- found that gave a lot of relief.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 25/06/2023 20:49

I have skeeter syndrome. It's very annoying!

I recommend moskinto patches. They are brilliant and drug free. If you can get the patch on before a scratch will go down much more quickly and far less itchy

HappiDaze · 25/06/2023 21:01

Draw a circle around it in permanent marker and if it increases and your DC feels unwell see your GP or visit a walk in emergency centre

HappiDaze · 25/06/2023 21:03

Try all of the above especially antihistamine bog standard own brand is fine

You basically just don't want it to get infected as then you'll have issues

As it is now it's fine

DancingIsHealing · 25/06/2023 22:45

Thank you for all advice, I've drawn around it and I'll see how it is tomorrow

Looks like what PP have said, an allergic reaction to the bite. He could require some antibiotics, just in case. I suffer with this too. Looks angrily at 2 bites starting to blister…
