To speak to neighbours?

I live in a terrace with a small back garden.

I have had to speak to my next door neighbours three times now as their dog is left barking loudly and continually. Sometimes it's 20 minutes while it's out in the garden, sometimes they go upstairs and leave it shut downstairs where it barks for an hour or more. Sometimes when they go out the dog barks for hours and hours. It's been a nightmare and taken it's toll on my mental health. They thought nothing of letting it out to wee at 6am or 11pm and it barking for 20 minutes without being told to stop or brought in the house.

Each time I speak to them, they are apologetic and it goes quiet for a while. This time we were doing really well and each time the dog barked, they shut it up within a few minutes. All had been well for the past few months.

Now they've got a new puppy. A husky by the looks of it and it howls. A lot.

This morning I was woken up by the puppy howling at 5.30am. I went to sleep in a different room and again was woken up 4 more times until I finally admitted defeat and got up.

Today has been a nightmare. Half of the day has been barking and howling by the puppy.

I know the puppy has to be trained (they obviously didn't train their older dog not to bark) and so I was wondering would I be being unreasonable if I went round and asked them what they were doing to minimise the howling and barking?

The puppy has been with them a week.

It's been very quiet since they last heard me on my phone ranting about the noise. This has been for about three weeks now but then tonight the dogs have started barking again. Since 4pm they've been barking every ten minutes or so and haven't shut up. I'm so tired of it. It's ruining my enjoyment of my home as I can't eat a meal or watch TV or read a book in peace. I'm so sick of the dogs being my daily background noise.

I empathise massively with you OP. Have you heard anything back about the noise complaint? I would try to follow up with them if not. It's very difficult to drown it all out when it's all you can hear 😢.

Yes you can teach dogs to not bark constantly. Harder to do in some breeds than others, some being naturally
mouthy and some being far harder to teach, but with persistence it is possible

I always tell my dog to hush if she barks I dunno why others don't

SpeedbirdSquawker · 02/08/2023 17:58

She's lazy. She's already said that she wont be training them as she has no time yet she spends a good few hours a night sat smoking marijuana and the whole of the weekend doing the same.

I'm fed up of going round now as it makes not a bit of difference. I'm always on edge waiting for the barking to start. It's affecting things like work meetings and just me trying to have quiet time like watching TV or reading. Even if I try to nap I can almost guarantee that I'll be disturbed by the barking.

This sounds hideous OP. I have a dog, and no he doesn’t bark all day, in fact unless he spots a dog out of the window (rare) he doesn’t bark at all. Not a chance I’d leave a dog barking outside or inside whilst I’m in another room. They are inconsiderate owners and can’t believe they got another when neighbours had been complaining about the one they had

SpeedbirdSquawker · 02/08/2023 18:45

@Zanatdy they're nightmares. I was so upset when I heard and then saw the new pup. I was counting the days down until their older barking atrocity popped her clogs.

I can almost guarantee that within ten minutes of me getting home, there's barking. My heart sinks when I sit down to my evening meal and I'm ready to enjoy it and the barking starts. I'm so tired of the dogs being the background noise to my TV or just my life in general. I get extremely tense when I hear any dog bark now.
