To use lumea on my 15yr old’s legs?

My 15yr old is quite hairy. Fair skinned with black hair - Gets strawberry legs the next day after she shaves.
She constantly covers her legs because she is quite conscious of her legs. Even in the recent heatwave, she was in her long leggings!

AIBU to use my Philips Lumea on her legs? She is surprisingly comfortable with the hair on her arms. Leaves it alone. She maintains clean shaven underarms - no probs there ! Just the legs!!

Does she want you to?

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 25/06/2023 08:13

Why would you not?

MiddleParking · 25/06/2023 08:13

You are BU to phrase it as ‘use my Lumea on my 15 yr old’s legs’. You wouldn’t be unreasonable to let her use it on her own legs. You are BU to describe her as ‘surprisingly comfortable’ with the hair on her arms.

starrynight21 · 25/06/2023 08:15

Just tell her how it works and leave her to it. I'm sure she'll be happy to have it. I don't know why you wouldn't.

MantaKay · 25/06/2023 08:19

Of course it is fine. Education doesn't stop at teaching to walk, talk, ride a bike and cross the street. As she ages, you educate her on how to take care of a changing body. She has issues with her hairy legs, you teach how to take care of the issue.

Are you asking because of the guidance to not use of under the age of 18 in the booklet? I think that's just because they haven't tested it on under 18s. I vaguely recall hearing pregnant and breastfeeding women shouldn't use it either. I can't recall the reasons though. Id probably research that before using it on my kid. There's Def something about being out in the sun after treatment.

Assuming it's them being extra careful, I'd go for it. I was the same as your dd. Started IPL in a clinic 10ish years ago, for about 6 months of sessions. Hair became very fine, and I've some patches with no hair still. I can go up to a week without shaving my legs before it's really noticeable. If I magically has a few grand spare I'd get most of my body done.

(Can't speak to the home IPL system)

mynameiscalypso · 25/06/2023 08:32

Does she want to? She's 15, I think she's capable of making the decision herself (and using it herself). Also, I have hairy arms and find your comment about her being 'surprisingly comfortable' about her arms a bit off. Body hair is entirely normal.

AliceMay55 · 25/06/2023 09:58

She wants the hair gone on her legs. Lumea was my idea. She hates waxing, epilator etc, Shaving doesn’t last long enough

What I meant was, I’m surprised she doesn’t care this much about hair on her arms. Just the legs seem to be a problem.

Why wouldn't she use it herself?

I can't imagine my mum doing my legs when I was 15 but if she wants you to do it, then what's the problem?

Wallywobbles · 25/06/2023 10:01

Id advise doing it over the winter though. No sun exposure free use is strongly strongly advised.

EllaRaines · 25/06/2023 10:02

Why not start with those exfoliating mitts that remove hair? Follow up with a moisturiser.

To use lumea on my 15yr old’s legs?
Gowlett · 25/06/2023 10:05

I think those mitts were not work on light hair, really. Like buffing away the fluffy hair on the sides of your face. Or fine arm hair.

Gowlett · 25/06/2023 10:06

Will only work

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 25/06/2023 10:17

I've tried those mitts with DD and they didn't work at all on leg hair. I remember have some in the 80s that were great - probably more industrial strength back then!

I'm also considering investing in lumea or similar to do me and teen DD. I really wish id had mine done sooner.

SunnieShine · 25/06/2023 10:21

I wish I'd had a Lumea when I was 15. You are a great mum for wanting to help your daughter. There's no need for her to suffer these days.

Mufflette · 25/06/2023 10:21

I wish I'd had the opportunity to use a lumea when I was 15! I'd definitely go for it - but sadly may be better to wait til autumn due to having to avoid sun exposure while you're using it.

MoonsHaunted · 25/06/2023 10:21

Those mitts don’t work on my thick, dark hair. I just end up with hairy legs that are bright red from sandpapering half the skin off.

I think it’s only proper sunbathing. The booklet says something akin to ‘incidental sun exposure going about your daily business doesn’t count’.

megletthesecond · 25/06/2023 10:28

Tbf I've been lumea-ing for 2 years and I go out in the sun the same or next day. They've never burnt, and only tan very lightly. I am almost 50 though.
It can be very itchy at first though, that wouldn't be nice in the heat.

Lucy Long Socks · 25/06/2023 10:30

If she wants to, then I would let her. Give her the choice.

My 15 year old is also very pale and hairy. She grows her underarm hair long and she likes it that way. But shaves her legs. I've told her about my lumea. She is too scared to use it though. I've explained it doesn't hurt. Maybe one day she'll pluck up the courage.
