To not pay to choose seats but expect to sit together?

I'll be flying with easyjet on a short flight (just over an hour) soon. It will be me, my toddler (2 years 4 months) and my baby (four months). Baby will be on my lap. According to the website they will sit children near an accompanying adult - surely in the case of a two year old this means next to?! I really don't want to spend another £20 on choosing seats if it's unnecessary.

I'd challenge anyone to sit next to my child without actually offering me £20 to move seats to be next to him🤣. Just to be clear, he isn't just a naughty child but does have complex additional needs.

Surely if you can afford to fly you can afford to just book the seats. Save all the hassle and potentially being a pain in the arse to others

Because you like throwing you money away - it isn’t £20 per trip, it’s per person each way. You like handing out at least £80 for nothing - fool and their money, imo!

I still can't believe how many people are paying for something they will get for free.
And how it is apparently 'entitled' to expect to sit next to your own toddler without having to pay
Because there's no guarantee you will get it for free. It depends on who else is travelling.

On our last flight in the school holidays there were a lot of family bookings. Undoubtedly when there's only so many rows of 3/4, families choose to book to be together. That leaves a lot of odd 1 or 2 seats around the plane.

Sure some people might decide to penny pinch and stamp their feet on boarding that it's their right to have their preferences without booking a seat, but I doubt most families would split themselves up because someone else chooses to take a gamble that doesn't pay off.

Never been split on an easyJet flight and travelled with the kids at least twice a year during school holidays. Although would have enjoyed the solitude in the teen years!😂

NoDought · 25/06/2023 19:48

Think of it this way, the staff aren’t going to want a young child away from their parent, they will put you together or else incur lots of extra work for yourself, do not pay.

Getoutofherenow · 25/06/2023 19:49

Shaz1704 · 25/06/2023 18:36

I have always just paid extra to choose seats as I would hate to be split up from my child on a flight you just never know where the will put you x

On a seat on the plane usually - were you thinking they could put you in the hold or something?

So many anxious travellers on this thread - I hope your kids don’t pick up on this. It’s a bloody plane - nothing’s going to happen. How on earth do you lot cope with risk on s daily basis - there are bigger things to come!

suzysnowball · 25/06/2023 19:52

It's not throwing money away. It's peace of mind. If the two year old needs you, turbulence, is crying wanting you, wants a drink, snack etc you are next to them to deal with them.

whiteroseredrose · 25/06/2023 19:57

I've been asked to move because I was in an aisle seat and it looked like I was alone. An 8 year old was sitting alone a couple of rows down. If it is a full flight and people have paid for seats nothings is guaranteed.

People don't just fly for pleasure.

We don't know why OP is flying or her financial situation outside of the fact she'd rather not spend a needless £20.

They don't care. If everyone else has booked and paid for seats, they'll do what they can.

What a bizarre take @Getoutofherenow

I'm not an anxious traveller at all. I've travelled around Latin America and South East Asia alone.

But if I'm flying with my kids, I want to sit with them. So I pay so we can sit together in the seats of our choice. Comfort and convenience, not anxiety.

They always sit children next to their accompanying adult. They split adults up - not kids.

Cutie101 · 25/06/2023 20:06

Just checked with someone I know who works for them, don't worry, your 2 year old will be sat next to you as long as you make your bookings at the same time.

Fedupwitheveryone · 25/06/2023 20:11

@rookiemere I don't think it's just about money making. Seating passengers on a plane must be like a logistical jigsaw puzzle. If enough families with young DCs book, then they genuinely can't guarantee actual seats in the same row on the same side. In your case your DS was beside you - just separated by the centre. That seems fair enough to me.

but here's the thing - they manage it fine when you fly long haul. i've flown extensively with my child long haul and the system always automatically seats us next to each other. not across an aisle but immediately next to. It's only budget airlines that make you pay for this. It's standard elsewhere

Mochacino · 25/06/2023 20:12

WhenIWasAFieldMyself · 24/06/2023 17:45

Do whatever you want.
But if I'm next to you and your kid is behind you, I'm not moving. Because I paid my tenner.

This!! Am absolutely sick of entitled folk not paying for the seat they need and then expecting members of my family to move after we pay our extras to sit together .
Our kids are very tall and often get approached by pushy adults looking them to move. They’re still kids!

Beautiful3 · 25/06/2023 20:14

Just pay it for peace of mind. I've paid for my kids to sit next to me. You'll find most people have paid, and they're not going to want to swap with you.

Completelydonechick · 25/06/2023 20:16

Good luck to the person left looking after your two year old 😘😘A bit of free child care, thanks to those who say they won’t change seats 🤭🤭

DVL · 25/06/2023 20:17

Why risk it…

Why should anyone take any responsibility for a random child?

Actually I’m speaking from experience when I was younger we all went on holiday and I was split up from my mum and stepdad and was on my own at 10 never mind being 2 and on your own. I would rather pay and have my child next to me than sitting screaming next to some poor stranger and a stranger having to look after him/her than them being with there parents let’s face not many people would give up there seats for a mother and her children to sit together .

thanks for your concern regarding my child but at 12, 5 & 2 there doing amazing babes 😘 😏

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 25/06/2023 20:28

PS WHY do people bother to pay to choose seats? on short flights? it's not like any of those seats are all that good

Can you really not stretch your mind a little and think of even one reason why someone would want to sit in a specific seat?

Why do you think they'd pay any attention to your 2yo? I'd be sticking my headphones in, putting an eye mask on and ignoring them completely.

Not my child, not my problem.

ejbaxa · 25/06/2023 20:31

Nobody wants to pay the money. I guess it depends on how you feel about taking a seat off someone that they chose and paid for - and would probably not get a refund for, at least not without significant hassle.

FighterMumTigerMum · 25/06/2023 20:35

Flown easyJet within the hundreds of times. Never prepaid seats, never been split up on check in.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 25/06/2023 20:35

Kids will be sat with the lead passenger. Any subsequent adults will be sat randomly.

It's funny that people view people NOT paying (making a perfectly valid choice from the options available) as entitled and selfish.

User63847484848 · 25/06/2023 20:36

I’d risk it with an under 3. Would be ludicrous not to be sat together. I’m sure it’ll be fine as long as you check in promptly. It’s only 2 seats together we’re talking about. Different for a family of 3 or 4.
