Depending on the metal but I would guess they could pull towards the magnet - pull your hair out ?

SilverPeacock · 24/06/2023 17:35

You can’t have anything magnetic

Redannie118 · 24/06/2023 17:37

They wouldnt even let me keep my soft bra on because of the metal clip at the back, so no, you wont be able to have the scan if you dont remove them.

WafflingDreamer · 24/06/2023 17:40

No you will need to remove them.

Duttercup · 24/06/2023 17:43

It depends if the Trust you're going to has considered this issue.

If they haven't, you may get a blanket no.

If they have, they'll be able to test them with a magnet. If there's no significant pull (which there likely won't be), you can go ahead and they'll explain the risk of heating to you.

No nothing metal.
Most trusts insist you wear a gown rather than your own clothes. Bra off due to metal clasps

Alltheclogs · 24/06/2023 17:54

I was allowed to keep an ankle bracelet on which had solid silver charms on it- they just said to let them know if it got hot (it didn’t).

SquirrelSoShiny · 24/06/2023 17:55

It depends on the machine the newer ones seem more forgiving. I had MRIs with train track braced on and last one I was able to keep on bra though I decided to take it off.

SeaSnakes1 · 24/06/2023 17:59

I’ve just spoken to radiologist who has confirmed they need to be removed. Thank you everyone who took the time to reply

Tgey might have been okay if it was your knee that needed an MRI but as its your head no way. It causes artefacts on the imaging, as well as being magnetic.

Please don't give wrong advice.

True re bra. But if you wear clothes with no metal buttons, studs, zips etc then you will be able to wear your own clothes. If they offer you a gown just ask if it's ok as you have no metal. I always do this and it's fine (regular patient!)

Glad you got your answer op .

WhiteFire · 24/06/2023 18:13

I'm glad you have had it confirmed, apparently the magnetic field can pull out the extensions. Shock

For mine I was going from and to home so I wore pajama trousers to avoid zips (and having to use a gown)

Hope it goes ok,

Roselilly36 · 24/06/2023 18:24

Good luck for your MRI OP, I have at least one a year MS patient, some with contrast others without. Head MRI only takes about 15mins. If you have lots of hair like me, put your hair up in a ponytail, make sure the band doesn’t contain metal as the HCP will need to click the camera into the frame. I just close my eyes, they often offer music. It’s noisy but before you know it, it’s over. I hope you get a good result OP.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 24/06/2023 21:52

@Duttercup it's not wrong advice. At my trust you have to wear a gown and allowed no metal.
I should know. I do the MRI checklists for patients!
