To ask if there are any tips to get the smell of urine out of a mattress?

Mattress needs replacing really but in the meantime I would like to get the smell out of the current one. It’s for an elderly person I work with. Thanks for any tips.

I did this when a new cat peed on our brand new mattress and DH never knew!
Buy a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide, most pharmacies sell it and it’s only about £1.50. You mx it with water, washing up liquid and maybe bicarb and spray the mattress, although I soaked mine as it had gone through. After it dries, hoover it up as the bicarb will be on the surface. It will probably slightly bleach the area but that’s highly preferable to the smell of urine.
Google it as there are loads of posts about it.

I wonder if the sprays that can be used for pet urine can work?

Starsandrain · 24/06/2023 12:45

Thanks. I will check both out. I had bicarb in my head and have some of that so I may start with that and then progress to something else. There’s a lot of urine on it!

Obviously if you can’t get the 3% bottle, a higher strength is fine, just use less.
In answer to the Pet sprays, they may work but they have their own smell and I prefer the odourless hydrogen peroxide.
I think hydrogen peroxide and biological washing powder/liquid is far better than any commercial spray. (I have cats! 🫤)

Flash bicarbonate of soda spray is really good for this

@Starsandrain make sure you use the hydrogen peroxide with the bicarb as you need something to kill the enzymes in the urine. It will probably smell worse whilst it’s drying but should be gone after one or two applications.
hydrogen peroxide will sterilise the area too. It’s amazing stuff and can be used for so much about the house.

I use ammoniac, water and a bit of dishwasher liquid. It also works well as carpet spot cleaner.

Yes get the solution for cat pee, get a gallon bottle and pour it ALL on so it sinks through the entire mattress. Obviously it needs to air for a long time afterwards but the smell will be gone.

Lira715 · 24/06/2023 14:34

I use beckmans carpet cleaner it’s got a little brush on the top .. not tried on human urine but works on dog wee it’s only thing I’ve found that works.

PandaChopChop · 24/06/2023 14:36

Make sure it's completely dry (air it outside if you can). Chuck a boat load of bicarb on it and leave for 48 hours. Will be absolutely fine x

PucketyPuckPuck · 24/06/2023 14:40

My middle dc betwet for years and sometimes the waterproof cover failed.

Spray bottle 50% white vinegar, 50% water.

Spray all over, liberally. Then, when wet, sprinkle bi carb all over. Leave to dry then hoover the bicarb up.

Will stink of vinegar for a day or two then completely disappear. Always gets rid of 100% of the pee smell.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 24/06/2023 14:42

Cover with bicarb. Spray with white vinegar. Leave for 12 hours. Vacuum the remaining bicarb. Works a treat

PucketyPuckPuck · 24/06/2023 14:42

Bicarb on it's own will NOT be enough. Great alone for freshening a musty carpet or something but won't get rid of a urine smell.

Starsandrain · 24/06/2023 15:14

I have white vinegar and bicarb. Will try that on Monday and see how we go!

if caring for a person with continence issues, once you have sorted the smell issue (although I would just replace the mattress as bacteria will be growing in it). I would start using quite heavy duty mattress protectors. quite a lot of reasonably priced options available on amazon. John lewis also has some. probably you need the whole bed covered so I would recommend getting the biggest possible size.

JadeSeahorse · 24/06/2023 15:26

Definitely this!

Yes. A new mattress and a protector will be ordered.
