I have refused so far due to lack of confidence and general gibbering at the wheel.

I love motorway driving. It is so much easier than some of the prats who cut you up and those that do dicky things on roundabouts.
I do of course understand the nervousness though.

DrNortherner · 22/02/2008 20:53

Olive, I passed in December 2007 and it took me about 6 months till I went on a motorway. I was a jibbering wreck just thinking about it. Joining the motorway terrified me.

I confided in a mate at work and her words to me were "oh FFS, stop being a TWAT and just do it"

I did not want to be one of those women who don't do it.

So I did it and it was awful, I did it again and it was still awful but not quite as much - get the gist? I was heavy breathing nd had sweaty palms.

But, now I'm OK with it.

Go for it - at least you'll have dh with you.

Good luck.

DrNortherner · 22/02/2008 20:53

Dec 2006 I mean!

southeastastra · 22/02/2008 20:55

try the route you'll take early on a sunday morning for a trial run and make sure you're aware of the exit you need to take.

google maps are great for seeing the layout.

i have to know the layout before starting the journey, it really does help.

SlartyBartFast · 22/02/2008 21:01

i have beendriving 13 years
and have never driven on motor way.
don;t mind duel carriageways, dont mind going fast but hate motorways.

SlartyBartFast · 22/02/2008 21:02

i'm obviously one of those
women.....

Divastrop · 22/02/2008 21:03

in response to the op;my sister's dp is a driving instructor(and has been for 15 years)and absolutley hates motorway driving, and avoids it at all costs.

worley · 22/02/2008 21:08

it was 2 years before i drove on a motorway, purely because we live a 2 hour drive from the nearest motorway!! but drove on duelcarridgeways lots and maybe had enough experience by then to not be to worried about it

opps

Cam · 22/02/2008 21:12

I keep telling people that I haven't driven on a motorway since the 1970's

blueshoes · 22/02/2008 21:13

motorways are easy. Roundabouts far more difficult.

Cam · 22/02/2008 21:14

I like roundabouts

peanutbear · 22/02/2008 21:16

I passed my test over 15 years ago drove all the time for work still drive on them now but there is 1 section of the M6 up north that I will avoid if I possibly can and dont even like being a passenger whilst on it

In general though its easier than a road if not more than a little boring

Iota · 22/02/2008 21:18

OO - you are better off in a big powerful car on the motorway than in a litttle runabout

DrNortherner · 22/02/2008 21:23

how about this for a roundabout?

Iota · 22/02/2008 21:26

there's this beauty in Hemel too

saffy202 · 22/02/2008 21:28

I've been driving for 7 months and have yet to drive on a dual carriageway.

I did the Pass Plus so I have drove on the motorway, and I did enjoy it and find it easy but then again I had the safety of the instructor next to me.

MrsTittleMouse · 22/02/2008 21:46

I have driven on a motorway. I took my Mum with me.

bookwormmum · 22/02/2008 21:53

I didn't drive on motorways much (my then-bf kindly let me drive his aged car but preferred to do the m-way bit himself as his car was not renowned for speed ) until I moved 80 miles from home with my car, and and the journey took 3 motorways and several very busy A-roads to reach. It's really a matter of practice. Before you go 'solo' as it were practice getting one junction of a reasonably nice [quiet] m-way, and coming off the next.

I actually prefer m-way driving to going around towns now. I don't get much chance though as my job is only a few miles away.

Remotew · 22/02/2008 21:56

YANBU I have been driving for over 25 years but hate the motorway. Do it when I have to but it is always an ordeal. Guess its a women thing. Everyone shoot me down.

bozza · 22/02/2008 21:56

Having passed my test half my life time ago (I am 34) and having a motorway commute to work I find it hard to relate. Although I think it is different if you pass when you are young because at 17 you tend to be pretty fearless about most things. Olive I think you should choose a quiet time of day and go for it. Maybe just one junction the first time.

PS when I was an au pair in Dallas there was a bit of road where you got on in the fast line and had to exit 5 lanes over 1 mile later.

blueshoes · 22/02/2008 21:57

Try the hangar lane gyratory in west London

laundrylover · 22/02/2008 21:58

OliveOil, you must live near me as you mean the junction at Bredbury where you join in the fast lane eh? I love motorway driving but I think that one is barmy!

The M67 is a good one to try on, you can just go up and down it and round the roundabouts at each end on a quiet day and you'll soon get the hang of it.

BTW, just had a look at your profile so will look out for your paint spattered kids next time I'm in Ikea - we are always there as DD1 loves the creche and I take DD2 to the cafe and get a free coffee. Sorted.

bookwormmum · 22/02/2008 21:59

I passed my test when I was 21 but didn't drive again until I was 23 . Bought own car at 25 (was too poor before) and haven't looked back since....

well only when reversing .

Don't do the 4 weddings trick and you'll be fine....!
