Told this is ok for car seat but I don’t see how?!

Ds 7 months is long for his age. His feet touch the back seat of the car in his rear facing car seat. I’ve googled this and seems to be ok but I don’t understand how it can be? Isn’t that dangerous? Should I be getting a bigger seat already? At the moment his soles of feet can touch the back seat and soon I expect he will be able to properly press against it. He definitely can’t stretch out properly with a gap?

Why would it be dangerous? Do you mean bad for him developmentally? Or that you think it would hurt his legs in a crash?

It is absolutely OK. In what way would it be bad for him?

He needs to remain rear facing for many years yet so his legs are inevitably going to touch the seat.

I found car seat safety an absolute minefield too!

But it really is 100% safe for their feet / legs to touch the seat, and they should rear face for the first 4 or 5years of their life to travel as safely as possible (5 times safer to rear face than to forward face)

Maybe have a look at Car seat safety uk on Facebook if you want to get some expert advice

We have an ERF seat and plan to RF until 7 at this rage. His legs are absolutely fine! Given the choice kids naturally put their legs that way not dangling. Rear facing for as long as possible is the absolute safest way!

My daughter is nearly 6 and still rear facing. Much safer. She will stay that way until 25kg, she is about 18/19kg now so hopefully good until she is 7.

Babies can look "too big" for their carriers but go by height and weight for the car seat model not what it looks like. Infant carriers tend to be the safest thing for babies, best not to move them up to a bigger seat before they need it.

It's absolutely fine, as their legs get longer they can sit comfortably in a frog leg position quite naturally.

Mine rear faced til a new car seat was needed age 3 1/2!

Knees were bent for car journeys but they didn't know different.

Its absolutely fine. There is a brilliant fb group called Car Seat Safety UK. Loads of photos of 5, 6, 7 YEAR olds still rear facing. Have a read and hopefully it will reassure you 😊

Absolutely the safest way to travel in a car is… to not get in!

eurochick · 23/06/2023 22:32

Mine rear faced until somewhere between 3 and 4. I can assure you her legs had touched the seat back for some time before we turned her. It's fine.

I have an extended rear facing seat for my almost 3 year old that should fit until he’s 4.

go on YouTube and watch the tips videos (some are only 2-3 mins long and you’ll get the message). Rear facing they are 90% likely to survive and crash. It’s something like 5 times more likely to not break their neck than forward facing.

having their legs bent up is not an issue and in my experience they don’t seem to mind :)

I have a britax romer multi-way btw
