New uniform policy

My eldest DD is 4, she starts reception after summer and currently attends the attached pre-school.
Today is her last day of nursery as we go to Canada for 6 weeks starting next week for a family wedding and some other family events.
When I picked DD up from nursery they have her new school bookbag, they said that this was their gift to all the children moving up and it contained information about the school and some other stuff.
I was reading through the uniform policy and it’s been updates so all children Reception-Year 6 have to wear a shirt/blouse and tie, before Reception to Year 2 didn’t have to wear it and Year 3-6 could wear polo shirts on PE days, their cardigan/jumper has to have the school badge and shoes have to be navy (rest of the uniform is navy and red).
They have also changed the wording for the Blazer, badged jacket, badged PE top etc. from optional to “Highly Encouraged”, you can buy the badge from the office for £2.50 and sew it on yourself or buy the items from two local retailers or online.
Now my DD will have to wear a blouse and Tie to school everyday which I imagine will make getting changed for PE harder and I feel like the change of wording in everything makes me feel like I have to get her the badged stuff and the blazer when before I wouldn’t have.

AIBU to think it’s unnecessary for 4 year olds to wear a blouse, tie and Blazer? And the other changes are unnecessary too?

Yep, totally fucking ridiculous.

PuttingDownRoots · 23/06/2023 16:28

Are you in England? Schools are supposed to be reducing logoed items not making uniform more complicated

titchy · 23/06/2023 16:32

Blazer is ridiculous yes, tie will be elasticated so not too bad. But buttons and reception children are not a good choice, unless on PE days they wear PE kit all day.

We are, the only big change on logo is before cardigans and sweatshirts had to be badged if their polo tops weren’t. It’s more the tie and change of wording that bothers me.

Nope they have to wear full uniform on PE days.
If I’d known they were changing uniform this much I’d have picked a different school I think.

I agree but the school my DS is going to in September is the same and always has been with button up shirts and ties. I’ve found Velcro shirts in M&S so getting him those to make changing easier.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 23/06/2023 16:38

I absolutely hate schools that have shirt and tie for primary school. It is so unnecessary. They should be comfortable and free to run and jump. YANBU

I really do wish uniforms were tracksuit bottoms and a tshirt for all years until 16.

LlynTegid · 23/06/2023 17:26

If they have only advised you in July about a change from September, this is unreasonable. Minimal opportunity to challenge, to find the money for some people. Indeed you could argue a case that they have failed under equality duties.

Object and do so now. As you note, you made a choice based on their policy and took into account the costs concerned. At least you should get a term or a year's grace before these are introduced.

I feel like the change of wording in everything makes me feel like I have to get her the badged stuff and the blazer when before I wouldn’t have.

The words "highly encouraged" would be ignored by me. I wouldn't buy the badge stuff unless it was actually required.

RidingMyBike · 23/06/2023 18:23

School did this to us - were really late sending out information to new Reception parents so a letter came out about now with these new requirements.

The uniform supplier for the branded stuff had two cut off dates for discount ordering both well before the letter arrived so I'd ordered based on the information from the open day pack and the school website.

I didn't do anything and just sent her in wearing the stuff I'd ordered. I wasn't going to buy a second lot and I couldn't return the first lot as they'd been opened, tried on and labelled.

School never said a word!

Shortandsweet20 · 23/06/2023 18:44

The school I currently work in has shirt and elastic tie for ks1, reception in polos.

If I'm honest, after a few weeks, most could do their buttons on shirts independently, the Velcro top buttons work really well. I've got about 2 now at the end of year 1 who can't do their top button but everyone else can change on their own in less than 5 minutes.

Navy shoes however I'd be moaning about 😂

No need for little children to wear ties - very silly
